The White Houses account of the Tillerson firing collapsed within minutes.
Senior administration officials told outlets including The Washington Post and CNN that Tillerson had been told he would be dismissed on Friday, March 9.
Within the hour, the State Department issued a statement insisting that Tillerson had every intention of remaining and did not speak to the President this morning and is unaware of the reason. CNN reported that Tillerson had received a call from White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on Friday night indicating that he would be replaced that did not specify timing; a senior White House official told the network that it was Trump himself who had suddenly decided to pull the trigger on Tuesday morning. Tillerson learned of his actual firing the same way everybody else did: By reading about it on Twitter shortly after 8:44 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, March 13.
A lot turns on that timing. On March 12, Tillerson had backed the British governments accusation that Russia was culpable for a nerve-agent attack on United Kingdom soil. If Tillerson had been fired March 9, then his words of support for Britain could not explain his firing three days before. But if the White House was lying about the timing, it could be lying about the motive.
And since it now seems all but certain that the White House was lying about the timing, it looks more probable that it was lying about the motive too.

I laughed sadly when I read someone post, "we need to come up with a plan."
Putin had a plan long ago, the Trump crime family put it into motion, it is moving along nicely on the road to totalitarianism.
Our national security has been torpedoed, the State department is dead in the water and sinking, and may take us all down in the undertow.

(8,203 posts)He got sick - updated story 3/10/2018....hummmmm
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson canceled his scheduled events Saturday in Kenya because he was sick. "The secretary is not feeling well after a long couple days working on major issues back home such as North Korea," U.S. Undersecretary of State Steve Goldstein said.
So Tillerson knew before he got back from Africa?? Who knows for sure...they all lie...

Since that didn't happen he was really of no use.
His tenure at State was just a series of being undercut by trump.

The fake story about how they told Tillerson on Friday that he was fired - that's a complete lie. Tillerson gave an interview on Sunday saying that he believed the Russian guy was poisoned by Putin's henchman. As soon as Pootie heard that, he told Cheeto to fire him.

Putin has not told Ryan and McCONnell to dump him yet.

(58,785 posts)change from pre-firing in our position.
Now, England's! Apparently there are a number of punitive actions England can take, including passing their version of the Magnitsky Act, seizing assets of named persons. They also can do a version of that anyway through other means; apparently the vast majority of Russian oligarchs have assets there and many enjoy visiting homes there, so just freezing assets would sting. The EU has expressed openness to supporting UK on the unacceptability of using nerve gas in one of their countries, and of course there's article 5 of NATO.

Trump's made noise about supporting UK, but failure to do so would only underline Trump's bizarre relationship with Moscow.
As for Pompeo, he's a trumpster and his own pre-election behavior is highly questionable.

Pompeo's made a little hard-line noise against Moscow since going to the CIA, but he also lied about the intelligence assessment of Russian intervention, on the lines of "nothing there." He's in league with the Kochs, was a climate denier in congress, and has been giving Trump his intelligence briefings and has developed apparently a pretty decent relationship. And we know that only people of really bad character have been able to do that with this president.

(2,162 posts)Why did Tillerson accuse Putin of being involved in the assassination? Isnt he a medal-bearing friend of Russia?
Maybe he knows that Putin is annoyed at him for not getting sanctions lifted, so hes trying to curry favor with Western allies?

(19,240 posts)The corporations that were foolish enough to try to do business with Trump and Putin now realize that they made a terrible mistake, and they are trying to come clean and buy immunity. Putin wants Tillerson out of State asap for fear that he will use his security clearance to get more info that he can feed to Mueller. It is likely that Russia has a mole in Justice, someone they are blackmailing to keep tabs on Mueller and they realize that Tillerson and Exxon have turned on them and they are doing what they have to do to contain the damage.
I am just hoping that Mueller allowed info to be passed to Putin by the blackmailed mole so that Justice could determine the ID of the mole and that said mole is now be questioned in a secret room somewhere.
At this point in the game, it is no longer a matter of if Trump goes down, just when and how much money insiders can make from him before he goes and how much chaos Russia can create in their greatest enemy before they lose their foreign "asset."
Oh, and how can Trump be of best use to Putin in his final days? As a martyr, to get the right wing gun toting base good and riled and violent. If I were Trump, I would stay in DC with the Secret Service at my side. And I would start talking to Mueller. Wonder if Trump has figured this out yet? Wonder if Putin is wondering when Trump will figure this out?
Trump is not planning to travel to North Korea, is he? Sounds like a really bad idea to me.
