On Monday night, a dog died in a plane after a United Airlines flight attendant forced the dog into an overhead bin.
Maggie Gremminger, a passenger on a flight from Houston to New Yorks LaGuardia Airport, uploaded a photo of the dogs owners on Twitter. I want to help this woman and her daughter. They lost their dog because of an @united flight attendant. My heart is broken, reads the image caption.
The Points Guy reports that during their flight, an attendant insisted that the woman put her dog, which was held in a TSA-approved pet carrier, in an overhead bin for the rest of the flight.
Passengers heard barking during the flight, but didnt learn that the dog had died until the flight was over.
There was no sound as we landed and opened his kennel, passenger June Lara writes in a Facebook post. There was no movement as his family called his name. I held her baby as the mother attempted to resuscitate their 10 month old puppy.

United Airlines apologizes for dog that died after being put in overhead bin
A passenger said a flight attendant instructed the woman to put the bag containing the dog into an overhead bin.
United is investigating the incident.
The airline said it will refund the cost of the tickets and pay for a necropsy.
Maggie Gremminger identified herself as a fellow passenger on United flight 1284 from Houston to LaGuardia Monday night and wrote in a Facebook post that she witnessed a flight attendant tell the passenger to place the dog carrier in the overhead bin.
The passenger was asked to move the bag because it was sticking out into the aisle, according to a person familiar with the incident.
"By the end of the flight, the dog was dead," Gremminger wrote. "The woman, crying in the airplane aisle on the floor."
Gremminger, who did not immediately return a request to comment, posted that she heard the dog barking and "we didn't know it was a barking cry for help."

(63,221 posts)What a nightmare! Why on earth did they have to put the dog in an overhead bin if it was already in a carrier? The dog wasn't going to hurt anybody. Just a senseless tragedy.

(32,456 posts)The passenger adamantly pushed back, sharing verbally that her dog was in the bag. The flight attendant continued to ask the passenger to do it, and she eventually complied. By the end of the flight, the dog was dead. The woman was crying in the airplane aisle on the floor.
Gremminger stated that the flight attendant denied knowing that a dog was inside the carrier, but that another passenger said he heard the flight attendant say, You need to put your dog up here.

(20,684 posts)Either you allow small animals, or you don't. But once the plane is up, there has to be a way to survive the flight. There are bathrooms or closets they could have used that have air, if it was actually so intolerable.
I also wonder why she didn't call the airline and complain from the plane? Don't they have those phones you can use? Aren't they allowing calls on long flights?

(1,332 posts)They need to fire that flight attendant. NOW. I cannot believe the woman
passenger didn't try to at least check on her dog during the flight. A 10 month old puppy! Poor thing probably suffocated or died from shock.

(8,922 posts)I would have been arrested for assault on an attendant that tried to do that to my dog.
The stupidity of this goes beyond all reason. What has this world become? Someone had better go to prison for thos cruelty.

(44,973 posts)This breed of dog is prone to suffocation because of its flat face. And the airflow in the bin isn't good. Live animals should never go into overhead bins.

A pet is like a family member.. the pet owner(s) are going to have a hard time with this (guilt, regret, etc) knowing they were right there while their pet was tortured to death.

I'm looking at my sweet Jazz ( a beagle) lying on my legs. I just can't imagine how this poor dog's owners are feeling.

This is absolutely not the passengers fault. They did what they were told. However, lets be honest - this was an unbelievably moronic thing to tell them to do. Anyone with half of a brain would realize how stupid this was to make the passengers do (or face arrest, probably). Even if the dog survived, forcing them in a space like that is traumatizing and inhumane.
I would never bring my dog on a flight. Too many idiots working for airlines, and horrible flying conditions for animals (humans included).

(4,448 posts)Overhead bins are the same temp, cabin pressure and share the same air as everyone else. They are also subject to the same vibration and noises and the rest of the passengers.
Poor thing. Must have been so traumatized that it had a heart attack of stroke.
