Every so often, the "moral majority" that I remember in the 70's tries to become more than the bad end of the bell curve, but they never really take serious ground: frump's electoral victory might have seemed like another rearing of the monster's ugly head, but it is always sent back into it's cave when people wake up to their threats.
America is not a theocracy: It gets lazy sometimes, but it's not a theocracy.

(14,583 posts)It was a good night, and it should help to keep our side juiced up to do what needs to be done in November
But, the stupid in this country is D E E P. And, what last night shows is that IF they are down AND our side is 100 percent engaged, we can beat them back.
But, that is what happened in 06 and 08.
They were down from the disaster of Bush 2, our side had big energy, then an incredible candidate (and POTUS) to rally around.
BUT ... we got burned out, having expended all of our energy AND they recouped and got EVEN MEANER and ANGRIER.
2010 the country, for not good reason gave them the biggest mid term win in our lives, and ushered in the tea party in full.
That is the thing - their hate, their lunacy is never ending. We don't have that deep seeded dark energy, we come and go, and they ALWAYS rebound ...
The same $hit is there ... The stupid, the profit making conservative media, the biases and hatred they fester and nurture.
We can over come it when they get into power and the country can't stand how horrible they are AND we have the energy to beat them in fights like this.
But from Nixon to Reagen to W and now 45, this country ALWAYS indulges right wing fuck wittery, and it gets worse as it goes along ...

(7,142 posts)The southern and western parts of the Pa. 18th district may as well be West Virginia, and Lamb won.
The Pa. 18 was a +11 Republican district. That means that a generic Republican has a +11 advantage over a generic Democrat.
To put that in perspective, to put the naysayers in perspective who are saying that Paul Ryan is in a safe district, his district is only a +4 Republican district.
No more negativity, glory in Conor Lamb's victory over 10 million dollars of Koch money. Get on your surf board and ride the blue wave or get out of the water.

(3,010 posts)One of the happiest nights of my life - and a moment I was truly proud to be an American - was election night in 1998. Republicans were in the midst of some serious abuse of power - Clinton did the wrong thing, but impeachment was clearly going too far - and the voters told them. Gingrich resigned in disgrace.
I know times have changed, but people do tend to come to their senses when push comes to shove.
