"Senator, this would be more admirable if you had the same amount of outrage about the shooting deaths of American children."
Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) is being widely condemned for his quick reaction to the tragic death of a dog on an airplane while he and his fellow Republicans have done nothing about gun violence.
When a dog died while it was stowed in the overhead compartment of a United Airlines flight, Kennedy leapt to action.
He announced he would be filing a bill tomorrow that will prohibit airlines from putting animals in overhead bins, and added, Pets are family.
Then he sent a letter to the airline demanding an immediate explanation about animals that have died under their care, and touted a CNN appearance where he discussed the issue.
Kennedys flurry of tweets and public action occurred on the same day of the massive national walkout in schools across the country, where children protested gun violence and the resulting loss of life.

(5,591 posts)I am a passionate animal lover and felt sincere sadness and anger about the puppys death, I still cry and shake with outrage over Sandy Hook. I still get furious over Low level scum dwelling in the Republican Congress.
I respect
Animals far more than I do soulless, blood money politicians.
Batter them relentlessly.
And vote BLUE.

Don't let pets suffer just because of the hypocrisy. We CAN/MUST address BOTH
If you can't consider two (or many more) critical issues at a time without losing focus, then gawd help us all

(22,671 posts)It's clear to me that it's the preferential treatment in priority that is the focus here, the immediate jump to action for one and the lack of compassion and absolutely no action for the other (protecting children from gun violence).
Please direct your We CAN/MUST address BOTH anger at conservatives who refuse to listen.
"Animals over American school children."
That comment IS pitting the gun issue and children AGAINST animal welfare.
For gawds sakes, STOP IT
WE MUST ADDRESS BOTH

(22,671 posts)See, to prioritize is to rank two or more items in order of relative importance. It's not a decision of choosing one OR the other. So I think you've drawn a conclusion from something that wasn't said.
For your point to have merit, I would have had to use OR not OVER. If it makes you feel any better, substitute ABOVE instead of OVER.
"Animals above American school children. "
I'd ask that you direct your anger towards the GOP congressman that has chosen to address animal rights OVER and ABOVE the rights of school children.

(5,969 posts)but this isn't so much about pitting causes against each other than it is to point out this unbelievable hypocrisy and that needs to be addressed. I don't think anyone who spoke out in disgust would be opposed to Kennedy's proposal. But when the reaction after every school massacre is that one shouldn't act to hastily while this dog's death will have immediate legislative consequences, you cannot help but feel frustrated about the state of politics.
