I have been reading up on Watergate, supreme court decisions, etc and I have concluded firing Mueller would be the worst mistake Trump could make. It would expedite his removal. It would be Watergate on steroids.
If he fires Mueller that would be an admission of guilt and obstruction of Justice.
It would set off a constitutional crisis. Lawsuits would be filed immediatly and it would go to the supreme court. Trump would lose.
It would set off a firestorm in congress, among the American people and the news media. Things would get very ugly, quickly.
It would be very bad for Republicans running for office. Thats a key point. Republicans don't react until their jobs are on the line.
What Trump is doing now is his best bet. Lying about the investigation, calling it fake , a which hunt. He has tens of millions of idiots who will believe him. It he were smart he would do everything he could to extend the investigation and create a fake reality about the investigation.Try to make Muellers charges unbelievable.
I'm sure Trumps lawyers have told him it would be very risky to fire Mueller. That does not mean he will not do it. He's not to bright.
Do not be surprised if you see Trump and his lawyers use a defense that includes claiming the investigation threatens national security because of international threats, War. Nixon did that. I'm sure Trump and his lawyers have studied Watergate.
The sooner this is over the better. Maybe we all should be wishing he does fire Mueller.

(23,155 posts)However, this is America in 2018 where the russian repugs rule everything for the benefit of the oligarchs. Do you really think Ryan or McConnell will allow orange assface to be held accountable for his treason and conspiracy against America with a foreign country - NO. NO, because they were part of this treason and know it would come out if drumpf goes down. Only if there is multiple tapes of don the con conspiring with russians to steal the election and to lie to the FBI could the repugs possibly be motivated to do anything thru a massive public clamor for action. Mueller must continue until he gets to the truth of an entire political party committing treason against our country for personal gain and shares the proof with the nation. That is our only hope of continuing as a constitutional democracy, IMO.

(7,772 posts)Whatever Mueller comes up with, Congress will have to act on. Impeachment (indictment) followed by conviction and removal by the Senate is highly unlikely.
Investigation, indictment and removal can be taken up by the next Congress.

(4,379 posts)A lot of people are not paying attention. They will if that happens. It will spread like a wildfire. If I remember correctly, a lot of Americans ignored Watergate until Nixon started to fire people and the tapes came out.
