Just curious - I haven't deleted mine, but I don't use it very much. I am a little concerned about it being tied into my youtube, not sure how tight the connection is there.

(9,729 posts)but I quickly decided that was NOT for me. Hundreds of total strangers wanting to be friends, distant cousins "throwing sheep" at me...
not my cup of tea. I exited quietly and have never regretted it.

(6,399 posts)I've been on it since 2008 and I've never had that experience. I can't figure that out.

(9,729 posts)I got a couple of emails asking (paraphrasing), "Have you completely disappeared off the face of the earth?" As if one who isn't on Facebook doesn't exist.

(21,786 posts)Too many issues with them - I don't need trolling or any other invasion of my privacy from them. We get enough of that shit as it is from other means.
Also, anything you put on those sites is out there for permanently.
And as such, any prospective employer or client will look to see what you have on those media.
As a very opinionated person, I don't want to give such prospects ANY kind of excuse to either not hire me or do business with me.
To be sure, the only social media I do use is LinkedIn - however, that is mostly understood to be strictly a professional career social media, professionals to professionals. If you were to Google my real name, that's the first item that will pop up. Strictly professional, nothing personal, no selfies, etc.

Plus, it is the only way any of my relatives ever see pictures of my kids!
No one else in my household has an account, so I'm the one who keeps up with that stuff.

(38,958 posts)I use it for my hobbies of photography, genealogy and war gaming, picking up all sorts of information that I would not otherwise have. I follow the Botanical Garden, Zoo, History Museum and Library along with local merchants. I get labor news and keep up with friends that would likely have fallen off the radar without it. My political views havent changed, my hobbies havent changed, but I was manipulated into buying a corned beef dinner on Saturday at the meat market in Ferguson, MO.

(4,112 posts)I live several hundred miles from most of my family, and many of them are spread out over the northeast and midatlantic, so it's a convenient way for all of us to stay in touch and keep up with each other's lives. I've tried to avoid the political discussions, because it invariably led to an argument that was unwinnable with parties so entrenched. Now, we focus on soccer games, band camp, and who's having a baby or getting married.

(8,853 posts)Saw a post here on DU about how to delete your FB account permanently. I have it bookmarked. Facebook just irritated the shit out of me. I hated getting friend requests from people I'd made a point of avoiding in person. Then there were the requests that I'd accept and then I'd never even hear from those people. You'd think that if you accepted someones friend request that they'd at least send one message to say hello and thank you for accepting the request. I'd accept these requests and then...crickets. I also got sick of getting notifications everytime someone blew their nose. It was when I was trying to figure out how to stop getting these notifications that a coworker stepped in and showed me how I could deactivate the account altogether if I wanted to. It's been deactivated for a little over a year and will soon be deleted.

I also run a business that has been doing much better when I display my work doing Period Clothing for people all over the country.
