(115,686 posts)John Gotti, Whitey Bulger, Charlie Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, O. J. Simpson and other thoroughly despicable characters, but Trump can't get anybody but goofballs like DiGenova, Cohen and Kasowitz. Lawyers tend to love high-profile cases, and you can't get any higher profile than this. But the aforementioned reprobates probably listened to their lawyers, and paid them. Trump doesn't do either - and he's such a scumbag that his taint would never wash off.

(62,444 posts)If you read the Karen McDougal complaint, it notes that she consulted with Olson's firm, Gibson Dunn. So Olson couldn't take the engagement even if he wanted to.

(115,686 posts)Most of those big firms can do the "Chinese wall" thing and take clients with potential conflicts with the clients' consent. But a posh outfit like Gibson Dunn probably didn't want to go near the whole hot mess of Trump's legal problems.

(102,263 posts)significant reasons. He could have gotten past any perceived conflict with McDougal since he did not consult with her. (Chinese wall)

(21,848 posts)An attorney can inform the client in writing of the conflict of interest. If the client still wants the attorney to represent him despite the conflict, then the client can sign a waiver and have the attorney represent him.
Of course, if you are the attorney and really dont want the client, then you dont present that option.

"Robert S. Bennett (born 1939) is an American attorney and partner at Hogan Lovells, best known for representing President Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal.
Bennett is also famous for representing Judith Miller in the Valerie Plame CIA leak grand jury investigation case, Caspar Weinberger, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, during the Iran-Contra scandal of the 1980s, Clark Clifford in the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) scandal, and Paul Wolfowitz in the World Bank Scandal. He served as special counsel for the Senate Ethics Committee's 19891991 investigation of the Keating Five. In 2008, Bennett was hired by John McCain to defend allegations by The New York Times of an improper relationship with a Washington lobbyist".

(82,849 posts)He's going to hire only the best lawyers, and the ones who turn him down or quit on him are, by definition, not the best lawyers. So he's hot on the scent of the best lawyers, now that the bad ones are weeded out. Hey, there's an ad for a lawyer! No fee unless they win your case! Trump likes the sound of that (no fee regardless of the outcome would be even better, but that's a negotiation for a later time). Anyway, no fee; what's "mee so thee lee oma"? Is that like "me so . . . "? Trump like!
