A step -- then a "lamp unto my feet." Another step. Another. I planned as best I could, because I was planning for my small children as well. Another.

I just had the most powerful sense that I would die if I did not. Not my body, but my soul. Verbal abuse is still abuse; we know that now.

Your decisions are your own -- and your soul is your own. Maybe that was the lamp unto my feet.

I will always give my ex credit for this: in the divorce he behaved honorably to me, and he always tried to be a good father. There was little money to argue about -- but I have known couples where one tried to impoverish the other, regardless.

Another step. Keep going. Life and love have second chances.
