Second 4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Northern California Coast: USGS

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake hit off the coast of Northern California near Eureka Thursday morning, then another 4.6 temblor struck Thursday evening near the same epicenter, according to the USGS.

The first quake struck at 9:24 a.m. about eight miles west of Humboldt Hill and roughly 11 miles away from Eureka, according to the USGS. The second quake struck at 8:09 p.m. and was centered about 29 miles southwest of Eureka.

A tsunami was not expected as a result of the quakes, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center.

The USGS previously stated that the morning earthquake was a 4.5 magnitude temblor before changing it to a 4.6 magnitude.

This was the first I heard of it. Guess I've been concentrating on the political stuff today. (Also quite a jolt.)

at a community meeting in Arcata, and nobody else there seemed to notice it either. Hubby and the little girl in McKinleyville, on the other hand, said it was strong back at the house, sent all the light fixtures and bookshelves swaying, and panicked the animals. Our home is about a block away from the beach, and my better half says they could feel the direction of the wave hitting the west side of the house first and then traveling east, from the ocean up to the mountains.

Third earthquake we've had up here today.

There is a fairly high possibility of a 8. quake in that area. It is such a beautiful, serene place, though astride a sleeping monster. How very Californian.

Is Jambalaya’s still going? Lived in Arcata, and briefly in Trinidad many years ago. Good times.

about the number of quakes this month up in No Cal. California has been way too quiet for a good 10 years now. Longer really. That scares me. I expect the next big one will be much bigger than anything I've ever felt. Even though I'm in So Cal it's all connected.
