...certainly since the "election" of Dolt45, and maybe even longer than that. And it's because of the quality of these kids themselves, something inherent in them, their generation, that's so clearly present. Here is America in the 21st century. A boy whose father was an FBI agent; a lesbian girl named Gonzalez; the granddaughter of an American icon. These kids don't have the cynicism that even their slightly-older compatriots have. Somehow, they've avoided the omnipresent cynicism, the immersion in the Fox News cesspool, the whole corrupt world of "media narratives". It's a fact that they don't watch TV as much as the Millennials did. They seem to have a natural compass, a sense of balance, that the country desperately needs. The whole idea that they're "pawns" of George Soros, or Hollywood "elitists", or indeed of anybody, is laughable. Were this true, had this all been scripted, Sam Fuentes wouldn't have thrown up behind the podium; Emma Gonzalez wouldn't have had that long silent pause, while the audience was slowly realizing what she was doing. They aren't "slick". No, these kids are serious, but natural--and somehow, of their time, their new century. Here's the future, folks. No doubt they'll be appropriately labeled by the media in time--but they'll never fit into anyone's pigeon-hole. And in the long run, the fact of these kids, the unveiling, as it were, of who and what they are--that's more important even than guns, the issue that gave them their voice. For the first time in a very long time, I'm hopeful about the future.

(155 posts)I am 78 and since Trump's election I have been worried about the future for my grandchildren. But after today I am much more optimistic. Now is time for the adults in this country to support and encourage these young people. They are a very diverse group and I can see where their zeal and passion might expand to include more than just the gun issue. They proved today that they are and will continue to be a force that the "establishment " will have to reckon with.

I wish I could be more optimistic about the future. I have been more angry over the last year than anything else. But now that Bolton has a job in 45's administration, I am truly frightened. I hope we and these wonderful young men and women all survive this.

(1,294 posts)You are the change youve been waiting for. The unmitigated joy of Obamas first win was about the only thing that comes as close to this for inspiration in quite some time.
