(13,524 posts)Virginia Senator Mark Warner (D) said Sunday that he would reconsider his previous opposition to a ban on assault-style weapons, following a day of gun-control marches across the country that attracted hundreds of thousands of participants.
Warner, one of 15 Democrats who voted against a ban on assault-style weapons in 2013, said its time to change our positions and reexamine gun control laws in the United States.
Id always been in favor of universal background checks, particularly after Sandy Hook, but I think its time for us to have a legitimate debate about restrictions on gun magazines and assault weapons, Warner said on CBSs Face the Nation.
You get into definitions, but the basic notion of these weaponized, militarized weapons need to be off our streets.
....Im shocked to find out he was ever against banning assault weapons, I really am, oh well

(6,228 posts)Sen Warner was just representing his state. As Virginia starts to change so will its senators and representatives.

(182,788 posts)Under 18,000 votes out of 2M cast. This was against Gillespie who lost in historical fashion last November against Northam.
Given how the whole 2017 election went here he may be able to take this stand. Guns have been traditionally a no-go in Virginia for Dems for a long time. That or he's a third termer, has his pension (rich as shit anyway - self made), and doesn't give a rip about another election

(30,481 posts)Look at the polls in Virginia. An overwhelming majority support background checks. He isnt going outside of the states norms. He is catching up.

(6,212 posts)Eight are still in the Senate. Seeing who some of the eight are I doubt they will change their minds.

(6,228 posts)As hard as it is to understand, those that vote the way we don't like are representing those who elected them. The Dem Party is not a purity party. VA and Sen. Warner must be changing their gun views.

(6,212 posts)but where I have a hard time is something like the assault weapons. Why would you not want those banned including the people they represent.

(15,241 posts)Anyone who wants to own one of these should be able to demonstrate their need to do so, their ability to do so, and their purposes.
Many other countries including UK and Australia have made owning or carrying weapons right that you have to demonstrate you have. Just like driving a car. Prove that you can, responsibly.
