This is a power play by both nations. Or so I think.

(58,785 posts)protector role has weakned to the point of being essentially abandoned in the face of NK's hostility, unwillingness to cooperate, and general troublemaking. There are other reasons, such as China's own strength making it unnecessary to maintain the Korean peninsula as a buffer.
Kim went to China, notably, not vice versa. Not that that'd happen.

They are also coordinating to put Trump in check on the world stage. This has been going on for months.
