ICE USES FACEBOOK DATA TO FIND AND TRACK SUSPECTS, INTERNAL EMAILS SHOW

CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA MAY have had access to the personal information of tens of millions of unwitting Americans, but a genuine debate has emerged about whether the company had the sophistication to put that data effectively to use on behalf of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

But one other organization that has ready access to Facebook’s trove of personal data has a much better track record of using such information effectively: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE, the federal agency tasked with Trump’s program of mass deportation, uses backend Facebook data to locate and track suspects, according to a string of emails and documents obtained by The Intercept through a public records request. The hunt for one particular suspect provides a rare window into how ICE agents use social media and powerful data analytics tools to find targets.

1. I have news for you- every law enforcement agency is doing that

If you use social media, if you have a cell phone, if you use email that’s all subject to varied levels of availability with subpoenas and court orders and warrants.

Location data for someone who is a fugitive is an easy one for them to get. Proof they are a fugitive, reasonable cause to believe this entity (Facboo, cell company etc) has data that can show where they are, bam you have it.

If your a fugitive it’s best to throw away your cell phone and never log into social media. You may as well be throwzing up a neon sign over your head.

Every time you do, your IP address is logged and you leave a digital fingerprint of where you were.

But as a described in this post, I cangather tons of info on you even without the court order, just in stuff you made available publicly.

If you take what I described there that is all stuff you leave behind willingly and publicly and combine that with everything available from the backend with a court order, well that’s a ton of information.

And don’t forget, while LE has to get a court order to get that info and use it, Facebook has that backend data and all that stuff I can access now and they are free to use it or sell it how they wish. No court order needed for them to use it in house or sell it.
