On that show, the bigot was the joke. And Norman Lear wasn’t trying to get America to be more sympathetic to his views.

Did you watch it?

Older adults trying to share the meds they can't afford. Daughter having to move back in and struggling to find a job and get child care. Older sisters fighting and then making up because they love one another in spite of political differences. Gender fluid grandson being loved and protected by his conservative, blue collar grandparents. Daughter planning to become a surrogate is supported by her female relatives who might not like it but agree that it's her right to her body.

I could go on.

Don’t go against the new DU hate.

I’m camping this week...can only use my phone sporadically, no tv - but I look forward to watching the show when I get back.

The majority of actors on that show are NOT 45 supporters.

Maybe this is one of those “ one bad apple spoils the whole bunch” thingies.

Let the normalization of orange fascism begin!

Can't wait for the episode where the guy fixing their roof gets dragged away in cuffs and deported to a country he's never known while his kids scream in torturous pain.

Maybe they'll tell some jokes about the hundreds of thousands of elderly African Americans who get turned away and disenfranchised because they don't have ID.

Maybe they'll yuck it up about the pardon of a racist criminal sherrif.

Oh, I know, maybe they'll laugh it up at the poor cancer sufferer as she dies because the health care and medical treatment she had for such a brief moment of time has been yanked from her in favor of a $50M tax cut for the Mercer family.

Fuck that noise. Knock yourself out if you want to watch the normalizing of this shitshow.

Me, I'd rather watch Sid Whitman concerts in mono

Because what I saw would do none of those things. In fact they might well do just the opposite.

Hell, I hate her politics. And I hate 45 and everything he stands for. But people who have awful viewpoints but also struggle with getting along and love the very family members they fight with exist and if the show finds a way to do some social commentary in a way that gets people talking I'm for it.

is exactly the problem.

"See, I love Donnie Short Fingers, but I'd never do that deplorable stuff...pay no attention to the fact that real people are being hurt by his policies and rhetoric"

I'm all out of fucks to give about people who normalize this complete moron.

Donnie Short Fingers got elected by promising to harm and destroy the people his voters wanted to see get harmed and destroyed.

I'll not celebrate their pain or wallow in their misery by pretending that this show is anything other than an effort to put a friendly face on deplorable behavior.

who isn’t doing a damned thing to improve her life but is instead leading an administration intent on making her healthcare and meds more unaffordable than they are now and demonizing and taking away the rights of her grandchildren and who has never in his life demonstrated a lock of interest in people like her, but instead mocked and ripped them off and laughed at women who look like her, calling them losers and pigs.

And I can understand the desire to boycott anything she's involved with. And she's just plain weird, as well. But Sara Gilbert is an executive producer. The reboot idea was hers. She's extremely liberal, as are John Goodman and Laurie Metcalfe.

There were three major plot points in the episodes:

1) Roseanne and Jackie trying to come to terms with their virulent anger over politics. Work in progress.

2) The whole family rallying around the grandson who loves to dress in a gender fluid way and is having to deal with it at school.

3) Becky deciding to be a surrogate mother and the women, who don't like the idea, still advocating for her being able to do what she wants with her body.

Some folks see it as trying to sneak horrific politics by us and making it acceptable. If that happens I'll condemn it. But I don't know about you but I've got those relatives who can be HARD to love in many ways, whose attitudes I can't fathom and hate. But they've done me right so many times, let me know they've got me even if they don't understand me either, that it makes me want to encourage talking about the hard stuff.

And we certainly are today. And that can be helpful.

I respect you a lot. I read your posts and I try hard to enjoy both what I easily agree with and what challenges me. And I'd be far poorer if I didn't. You're a damn sight easier to enjoy than if I didn't share your views but there are times when I have to stop and think about something you say that makes me uncomfortable, and be grateful for the chance. Maybe I see the show similarly.

I'm sort of thinking out loud here so it might not be as articulate as I'd like but I hope you get the gist.

even look at him sideways which proves I’m not an ignorant bigot” sub-plot.

Maybe I’ll take the time to watch when they run the episode where he confronts and tells off his grandma for lining up with the people who hate him to vote in a bigot who thinks she and her grandson are scum and who still supports an Administration full of people who not only think he’s scum but are using every ounce of their power to take away his rights.

And they don’t kiss and make up in 30 minutes because the pain she caused her grandson is way too deep.

And thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it!

I’m not very hierarchical, so I don’t think it’s got to be all one or the other. And we are telling stories here. Yours would be a good one, where the grandson rejects the grandmother who loves him because her political views cause him harm. By that measure I’d have rejected my own, who were as different from me as it’s possible to be. But they kept me from being an orphan and loved me and made me ashamed sometimes, and I have contemplated and suffered and felt gratitude all my life for the awful, wonderful, conflicted relationship we had.

I love stories. This series will have nine episodes as I understand it. I don’t expect fictional or actual conversions. But the stories...they’re priceless. And they’re far more powerful than the back and forth we hear every day in the news. I think there’s value in that.

When talking to Jackie, “You think healthcare should be free because you suck at math.”

I guess that makes sense to a Trump supporter, if you ignore all the countries that have a functioning universal healthcare system.

I was in school in those years it was on, and when I watched TV, it was more like "Martin", "In Living Color", "Fresh Prince of Bel Air", etc.

Didn't like or dislike the show, I liked Roseanne though, but this updated version of her...I dunno.

I don't plan on watching it.

Have other shows I'd rather watch and/or need to catch up on.
