This is so horrible, I have trouble believing it is real. Everything I find says it is. @therealroseanne: If u did this, one of your "cookies" can represent my great-aunt. She was stripped naked, sent to a gas chamber and burned. @RoseanneOnABC: If this is real, get canceled..
The photos appear to be real, not photo-shopped. Even Fox news acknowledges these are real. She did this photo-shoot back in 2009. I have no words except to say that these photos are horrible.

(15,888 posts)At her request, Heeb photographed Barr wearing the infamous Hitler moustache and a swastika, holding and preparing to take a bite of what the article refers to as burnt Jew cookies.
The shocking photos and interview are the first time the comedian has been seen after a self-imposed exile.
The article describes Barr who is Jewish as nailing the Fuehrers facial expressions with twisted glee.

(9,684 posts)Politically correct = good manners. Remember "good manners"? Argue without insulting. Don't wipe your nose on your sleeve. Treat others as you might want to be treated. Don't slurp your soup, talk in the library, tease the dog, make fun of others' misfortune, fart in the elevator? Perhaps not sharing political or religious opinions with strangers? Remember?
Some folks have basically co-opted political correctness as "what lefty elitists do" to excuse their own awful, base behavior (bad manners). It gives their coarse nature free reign. So now they can be as ugly, bigoted and hateful as they choose, because otherwise it would be politically correct.

(14,602 posts)I'm sorry, but that horrible war cost the world upwards of 60 million lives. If you have ever visited the Holocaust Museum, seen movies like Schindler's List or other things about this era, HOW can you EVER even think a joke about this is going to be OK.
My father fought in the second world war against the tyranny of fascism, and when I saw those nazi thugs marching down our streets at Charlottesville in their filthy brown shirts with their disgusting swastikas, sporting assault weapons and wearing their hatred like some proud badge on their faces, I was furious.
I wanted to puke more than anything else, but this isn't OK. No nazi demonstration or KKK or white nationalist march should ever be held in this country without vigorous and vocal opposition every single step of the way. This cannot be allowed to stand, and what Roseanne might not be understanding here is THESE FANATICS ARE SPONSORED BY PUTIN AND THEY ARE WINNING ALL OVER THE WORLD.
We simply cannot allow hatred to take over our political discourse, and mark my words, nazism rips apart a society's social, moral and economic fabric. Look at Germany. Their 'thousand year reich' based on hatred and intolerance lasted about 12 years. In 1945 the Red Army was marching through the ruins of Berlin - and they lost 300,000 people just in that one battle with the nazi fanatics. Just in the one battle. Russia alone lost over 20 million people. 6 million Jews were murdered. Romany people. Gay people. Disabled people.
Gassed, burned in crematoria, shot in mass executions, starved to death. Look at pictures of the living skeletons at the liberation of Bergen Belsen or Auschwitz, then imagine yourself closed into a cattle car with a hundred others on a death train moving over the steppe.
No, joking about the Holocaust isn't ever acceptable. Not ever. Not to me.
It was supposed to be a test as to whether the taboo on joking about the Holocaust still exerted as much power as it used to and clearly it does. I personally don't think it was an appropriate way to test that taboo and really see no reason to do so. However, I am relatively sane. I also don't understand why Heeb magazine went along with it. I find that rather strange.
PatrickforO
(14,602 posts)doesn't it?
Something I'd expect from Roseanne given her history of outrageous behavior and mental illness, but I don't understand why Heeb went along with it. I'm sure their entire staff isn't bipolar.

(49,064 posts)In an explanation posted on HEEBs website soon after the pictures were posted, the magazines then-publisher, Joshua Neuman, wrote that the photos were inspired by questions about whether the taboo against joking about the Holocaust and the Nazis exerted as much power as it used to.
Wrote Neuman: What better way to capture this moment in popular culture than by having the original domestic goddess don the Fuhrers famous mustache? For better or worse, hasnt the Holocaust itself been domesticated? ...
Roseanne, meanwhile, is the Trump-supporting star of the biggest hit on television. Barr was born into a Jewish family and in more recent years has explored the texts and ceremonies of the Jewish priestess movement.

We've all see the various fake-subtitled scene from "Downfall" where Hitler's raving and ranting can be applied to just about any off-topic subject.
That's all fine and good. It's fun to laugh at Hitler himself because it allows us to get our kicks in against a man whose actions embody pure evil.
However, that pure evil itself, in the form of the Holocaust, is still very much an untouchable, unspeakable, and unjokeable subject, especially considering there are still victims of the Holocaust still alive.

(58,724 posts)Mel Brooks was bothered by that movie:
SPIEGEL: Can you really separate Hitler from the Holocaust?
Brooks: You have to separate it. For example, Roberto Benigni's comedy Life Is Beautiful really annoyed me. A crazy film that even attempted to find comedy in a concentration camp. It showed the barracks in which Jews were kept like cattle, and it made jokes about it. The philosophy of the film is: people can get over anything. No, they cant. They cant get over a concentration camp.
SPIEGEL: But the film has deeply moved a lot of people.
Brooks: I always asked myself: Tell me, Roberto, are you nuts? You didnt lose any relatives in the Holocaust, youre not even Jewish. You really dont understand what its all about. The Americans were incredibly thrilled to discover from him that it wasnt all that bad in the concentration camps after all. And thats why they immediately pressed an Oscar into his hand.

(54,038 posts)Some try to "defend" this shit as satire or point out she's Jewish (yes, Jews can do anti-Semitic shit!), but I have seen countless things mocking Hitler, Nazis, Nazi Germany, even the Holocaust in a general sense, but this, to me, is mocking the VICTIMS! The only time I see people mocking the victims of the Holocaust is when they are ones who approved of it! So, when I see someone invoke "Well, Mel Brooks has done it!" I pretty much know the person is stupid and just looking for a way to justify disgustingly poor taste.

(15,888 posts)I pushed myself to watch the reboot of her show. I was not impressed. Her left leaning sister was made to look crazy and insane, always wearing her 'pussy hat' and 'Nasty Woman' tee-shirt while conservative Roseanne was the sane and reasonable person. Okay, well we all know that Roseanne is a stanch Spanky supporter. The next show, however has the genderqueer grandchild going to school. Roseanne gives the class a speech that she "is a white witch" and is "watching them" in a warning about bullying because of how the kid dresses. The grandfather, John Goodman of all people, gives the child a pocket knife to ward off the bullies. Interesting that there are two children who belong to minorities, a black girl and a genderqueer. Being that these are not adults I view them as token in this show. Like they are saying 'see we have these on our show so we're not racist or bigoted' even when the main character tells her loony left sister to "take a knee" when she says grace. I don't think I need this show in my life at the moment.

(54,038 posts)However, I am not surprised by those defending this or, rather, making excuses. Maybe it is because I was just at Dachau, Auschwitz, and Birkenau a few months ago, but this is really offensive and I don't give two shits that she is a Jew or it was a now-defunct Jewish magazine that posted it. (54,038 posts)I was talking with my husband, and I think it was one of the ones that first had queer Jews writing openly, but I could be thinking of another magazine. There are ways to discuss sensitivity around the Holocaust, even provocatively, but this was a step way too far.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)I don't think it is meant to be mocking the victims but rather mocking Hitler. I grant that the execution is poor, and that it's not funny to me in the way Mel Brooks is, but I do think it is meant in the same vein.
I found "Life is Beautiful" to be more offensive to the victims of the Holocaust.
Mel Brooks put it better than I could:
SPIEGEL: Can you really separate Hitler from the Holocaust?
Brooks: You have to separate it. For example, Roberto Benigni's comedy Life Is Beautiful really annoyed me. A crazy film that even attempted to find comedy in a concentration camp. It showed the barracks in which Jews were kept like cattle, and it made jokes about it. The philosophy of the film is: people can get over anything. No, they cant. They cant get over a concentration camp.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/spiegel/spiegel-interview-with-mel-brooks-with-comedy-we-can-rob-hitler-of-his-posthumous-power-a-406268.html
Anyway, in terms of the Heeb shoot, I didn't think it was all that artfully done, but I get that she and they were going for a Jews saying F- You to Hitler vibe (a sentiment I always support) even if it didn't quite land that way.
Behind the Aegis
(54,038 posts)There is a difference between making fun of Hitler and mocking victims. Clearly, you don't see it, though Brooks does! Just because it was a Jewish defunct magazine and a Jewish actress, doesn't make it any less offensive and inappropriate.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)I would point out that Mel Brooks did not make any comment with respect to the Roseanne photo shoot that I know of (if you do, please pass it along). I think Life is Beautiful trivialized the concentration camp in the ways that Brooks described. This photo was not meant to do that, I don't think.
Based on what she said and what the editors at the time said, the idea was to show that Hitler holds no power over Jewish people and that we, as Jews, are free to make grotesque caricatures of him as we see fit. This notion of presenting Hitler as some kind of gleefully monstrous and sadistic baker I think was what the images were meant to do. I can understand that they perhaps missed the mark - but I think their intentions were in the satiric tradition indicated.
And I also do think that her being Jewish and the magazine being Jewish makes a huge difference. If this was a non-Jew presenting this in the context of a source that was not a Jewish satire outlet, I would have a 100 percent different take on the matter. There is something cathartic, as Brooks mentions, about being able to, as a Jewish person, invert the power dynamic in this way.
Behind the Aegis
(54,038 posts)What Mel Brooks said, and what you are claiming to glean from it are completely different.
Yes, it does make a HUGE difference only in that they should have fucking known better! There are ways to addresses sensitivity in regards to the Holocaust, this was not it.
You see this as "satire" and "cathartic"...
I see this...
And I saw this...

(41,832 posts)From daily beast last June:
https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-roseanne-barr-abandoned-all-reason-and-embraced-the-alt-right
And then there are the full-on conspiracy theories. Barr has retweeted InfoWars reports on the 5.7 Million Illegals who they baselessly claim voted in the presidential election. She shared a YouTube video titled, CONFIRMED: SCALISE IS AT THE SAME HOSPITAL THAT TOOK OUT SETH RICH, as well as various other Seth Rich-related bulletins. Shes shared articles from The Gateway Pundit and Milo Yiannopoulos website, as well as Alex Jones videos. She shared a link that promised to expose Kamala Harris Dirty Sex Secret, and shes retweeted transphobic comments and tirades against supposedly violent Muslim Migrants that blare, Americans Dont Want these Savages in our towns!
If Barrs evolution from political outsider to card-carrying Pepe is an understandableif disturbingtrajectory, her positions on Israel mark a complete ideological 180. Prior to her Trump Twitter takeover, Barr was perhaps most infamous for a photo shoot in Heeb magazine titled That Oven Feelin. In the shoot, the Jewish Barr posed as Domestic Goddess Hitler, showing off her Nazi armband and pulling burned Jew cookies from the oven. While the shoot was eventually pulled from the Heeb website, rest assured that Roseannes Hitler spread really puts Kathy Griffins latest antics into perspective. Barr has long played fast and loose with accusations of Nazism; in 2009, she wrote a blog post in which she called Israel a Nazi state. Two years later, she deemed the country to be a brutal and undemocratic theocracy
which has the worlds fourth largest army. She also denounced the ethnic cleansing that is happening in Gaza right now, continuing, I say its the entire worlds fault, not just Israels and not just the Jews, for allowing the terrible crimes against humanity.

(3,479 posts)"What is with the hatred of Rosanne? I thought the only reason she was for Trump is because Pence is worse and Pence is so, so much worse."
It is a blatant fucking lie.

(2,061 posts)Being clueless is not something to celebrate.
Trump is out for Trump and believes in his god, the almighty dollar.
Pence is out for Jesus and would implement the Christian version of Sharia law if allowed.
The worst part, our votes count the same, yours and mine.

(3,479 posts)is that doesn't come off that way AT ALL. Based on the pictures I've seen, it looks like Roseanne is making fun of the victims of the holocaust.
Leave the skewering of Hitler to Charlie Chaplin and Mel Brooks, dumbass.

(8,854 posts)I too was trying to figure out how these photos make fun of Hitler. I mean, what is the joke being made at Hitler's expense? That he murdered Jews?

(2,404 posts)This is sort of an expansion to a post earlier in this thread concerning Roseanne and the possibility she is Bipolar.
I want to make it clear that I think Roseanne is a despicable human being. I've never been a fan and I don't understand the attraction.
Having said that, I want to comment on the bipolar condition and just how much a bipolar person is responsible for their actions.
My mother was bipolar and for the entirety of my life I and our family have had to deal with her inconsistent behavior. My mother could be so mean and cruel at times that it was nearly impossible to have a relationship with her. As an example, she told my father on his death bed that he "better not get well and bring home the same son of a bitch he was." He died the next day... And he was no son of a bitch. He tolerated a life with my mother that no one should have suffered.
My sister and I were on different sides when it came to my mother's personal responsibility for her behavior. My sister never held our mother responsible for her actions because of her condition. I on the other hand could never forgive her for her cruelty, I didn't give a damn what her condition was. I never forgave her and when she died, I didn't shed tear.
Since her death, I've softened my hate for her and have begun to understand just how much her bipolar condition played in her life.
So, when it comes to Roseanne, I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I hold her responsible for her actions. On the other hand I cannot fully discount that she is Bipolar and may not have full control over her behavior.
I just didn't want people here to brush off the fact that Roseanne had suffered from and apparently still fights a demon that few of us have to face or deal with.

(8,209 posts)I'm always for finding a path towards empathy--which, of course, is completely different than condoning someone's behavior.
It isn't easy to stand against the rising tide of group think, or perhaps I should say group hatred. Thank you.
