Now (today) might be a good time to take the leap.
I just received an e-mail that today only, there's an offer of a one year digital subscription for $80.
That's $50 off the regular price of $130.00. Offer ends tonight.
I'm thinking about doing it. They're doing some great investigative work and reporting and I'd like to support them.
Presently, you're only allowed to view a certain number of articles a month for free (I think it's 5), after that you're locked out.

(16,950 posts)Just signed up with them last week - regular price (of course!).

(7,768 posts)I had a digital subscription with them at full price. It was too expensive for me so I called them up to cancel.
I spoke with a woman and I told her I can't afford it right now. She made me an offer right then at half price!
$7 a month. SOLD!

(32,854 posts)There's no delivery cost, no printing cost (obviously), and they've already paid the salaries of the writing staff to write the articles. Whether we read the ads or not, is of no consequence to them. If we buy a digital subscription it's just more free money for them.

(2,396 posts)But I never cancelled my subscription because I want them to have my few little pennies per month to throw in the pot for support.
ETA: I also like signing in to WP with my Amazon credentials so I don't have to remember more stuff. Although somebody's probably tracking me that way

(11,589 posts)Glad to help.
Where ever I live, I always subscribe to my local paper, and so we also get WaPo delivered at home. I feel like we are helping people in the print and design department and delivery people, etc.
That said I totally understand if it's not your hometown paper getting a digital subscription.

Still, I wonder as always about media/commercial consolidation.
Did you read that RT (https://rt.com) was owned by Putin? (Kidding, NOT.)
Raine1967
(11,589 posts)he has nothing to do with the editorial content as well.
I don't look at this as consolidation, it's more a perk for Prime members of Amazon.

(10,533 posts)Not to mention all the Trump-apologist/Hillary-hating access "journalists" they employ like Haberman and Thrush.
The NY Times under Dean Baquet stinks. They are now the Paper of Access, no longer of Record, and it pains me to say that as a New Yorker.

(1,333 posts)I had a subscription for, I think 6 months on a special senior citizen thing and it runs out I think next month. I called to see if they had some other special going and when they said, I thought, $179 but maybe it was less for the super digital subscription where other people in the household can go on and you can download any of the ebooks they have, I said that's too much and then I got the "valued subscriber thing" and it was $79 for a year. I actually can't remember what the original price was, it could well have been $130, probably was. I get the NYT because my husband gets it s a teacher but I actually prefer the Washington Post, especially the opinion writers.
We have such a crappy local paper that I needed something better.

(31,464 posts)I have Amazon Prime! I never saw that offer, and bought a regular subscription. I've only paid for one month so far (first month was free) so I'll see if I can cancel it and buy it through Amazon Prime. Thanks for the heads-up!

(7,768 posts)I had registered and logged in to The Washington Post in the past. This is true but they still shut me out if I view more than 5 articles a month.
I LOVE the fact that most of their articles allow comments. I like to read the comments starting with "Most Liked" first. It gives me hope. lol
I post a comment myself once in a while too. Makes me feel good if I even get one "Like".

(423 posts)They continue to bend the knee to the NRA & allow the sale of assault weapons, parts & accessories on their platform. And they continue to fund hate speech by giving money to Breitbart with their advertising. Both have continued despite mass boycotts.
When they decide to stop funding hate & selling murder, I'll reconsider.

Anyone doing hard hitting investigative journalism on Trump should get some support. Freedom isn't free. Democracy dies in darkness

(3,433 posts)I just subscribed myself based on this thread, but I read all the WaPo I want. So here's the secret.
Open every WaPo link in "incognito" or "private" mode. You will always be able to read any WaPo or NYT or any article behind a Pay Wall but free for the first few articles.
Every new incognito session resets the counter.
Cheating but fyi for those who can't afford it. We need an informed population.

(9,175 posts)Yesterday I had to re-subscribe, but offers pushed it out of reach for me. I "chatted" on help page asking if that offer would ever return as I couldn't afford the new rate ($9.99 per month). He checked my account and said they would offer me the original $50 per year. I paid immediately and thanked them profusely.

(16,950 posts)We MUST support a free press - and that means we need to dig into the wallet.
That being said, does not hurt to keep the "digging" at a minimum - hey, we're not the 1%!
My own story:
My "local" paper is one that was owned by the crazy Mellon/Scaife clan that ran/funded a serious right-wing program.
I also had the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that was more "central/whatever" - which looked "left-radical" compared to the Trib!
However, the P-G has been tacking right and the Trib is tacking "center" - but I won't sign up for either. The P-G lost me when they canceled my subscription after 33 years because they claimed there were not enough subscribers in my neighborhood (yeah, lots of "Pugs" around here!).
As stated elsewhere, the NYT has been all over the board lately and because of their recent history I'm not going to sign up with them for a long-term thing and believing that we must support a free press, I did sign up for a WaPo offer. Might not be as good as a Prime offer (and, yeah, I'm a Prime member) so I'll check out if I can switch over to their offer.
Bottom line: We MUST support the FOURTH ESTATE. This administration is trying to control it - shut it up - shut it down - turn the masses against it (FAKE NEWS!). We CANNOT let that happen!
