American farming was surviving thanks to ethanol, exports and federal programs like CRP. Trump and the Russian handmaidens in the Congress are going to destroy the agricultural sector of the economy. The exports of agricultural commodities have been extremely important for the American economy. The tariffs imposed by Trump were put in for one reason and one reason, only, to cripple a major sector of the American economy. Farmers are getting nearly the same price per bushel today as they getting paid in the 1970's. The cost of production for corn has not decreased in the same manner. Corn prices peaked around 2012 at around $8 per bushel. The competition from other countries is hurting American ag because they just can no longer export enough product to keep prices high enough to keep prices above production costs. Current estimates for production cost per bushel is $3.85 and $3.88. Commodity prices tend to drop around harvest time. The TPP negotiated by the Obama administration would have helped the ag sector tremendously. The barrage of anti-TPP propaganda into farm communities made them even more susceptible to the Russian backed GOP messages. Please understand there was frustration about dropping commodity prices from the peak prices in 2012. Obama helped the ag community a great deal, but they blamed Obama and Hillary for the lowered prices in 2016. They are now literally going to reap what they sowed by voting for Trump.

The ag sector is just barely hanging on and with the tariffs, export demand is going to drop drastically. This will depress prices from corn, soybeans to hogs and dairy. The rural communities that voted for Trump are going to be devastated.

Add in the impact of the anti government propaganda so that the ag communities across the country have rejected all aspects of operating their farms with sensible environmental practices. This has made the vast majority of farmers dependent on chemicals and big equipment which are all very expensive.

The sale of American farmland to oligarchs is going to be a whirlwind after this fall. A large percentage of American farmland is owned be investors and rented to men and women who want to farm, but can never afford to buy land. This is about to get far worse. Our farming communities are being turned into feudal societies.

It is goodbye family farmer. Their rents will start as high as they can get away with, and if a farmer is somehow successful, they want a percentage of profits. Trump's moves are a kiss on the lips to big agribusiness, whose economy of scale and deep pockets allow them to weather commodity, produce and meat price downturns.

It doesn't take much to upset the balance in agriculture. Its not rocket science. Or real estate, so Trump has no idea. You bankrupt a family farm, and it's gone, poof

There is an ancient Chinese proverb: you can always fool a foreigner. They are gonna turn Trump into Chop Suey, and decimate rural America.

Just noticed the Chinese had threatened retaliatory import duties on American pork imports.

More here: http://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy-defence/article/2140113/china-will-give-good-it-gets-trade-war-united-states
(snip)
.....remarks came during an interview with state-owned China Central Television and after China’s commerce ministry on Monday imposed US$3 billion worth of tariffs on 128 US products, including fruit, wine and pork. That action was taken in response to the imposition of US tariffs on steel and aluminium resulting from a separate “Section 232” investigation.

-------------------
Just this morning China rattled its sword, threatening to impose import duties on soy beans, cars and whiskey, saying it planned to impose additional tariffs of 25 per cent on 106 US products imported into the country - a direct hit on Trumps's red state base.

Honestly, the complex blowbacks from any tariff war just makes my head spin.

Thank you for helping to answer my question.

I just found this, too, from the Des Moines paper..

Iowa will see 'hits across the board' as trade war with China escalates

snip//

An escalating trade war between the U.S. and China will hit two key parts of Iowa's economy — farming and manufacturing.

And the timing is terrible.

China said Monday it will levy tariffs of up to 25 percent on pork, ethanol and dozens of other products that would hammer Iowa's ag economy as it struggles to get out of a lingering downturn.

"It's going to make a bad situation worse for agriculture," said David Swenson, an Iowa State University economist.

And President Donald Trump's threatened tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum would hit Iowa manufacturing as it's getting back on its feet.

Manufacturers in February employed close to 224,000 Iowans, the largest number of workers since the 2008 recession.

The hit to manufacturing will be compounded since much of Iowa production is tied to agriculture.

Who knew trump would be so bad for Iowa.. with all the "winning" he promised. Instead they get a whole crap load of Whining.

Thank you!

Wow, new tariffs will impact them in many ways and we'll all pay in the end....

Well, those folks can now rest easy. Sarah Huckabuck says stand still while we stab you in the back and this pain is good for you, and will only last a few decades. Meanwhile, you can sell your farmland to a big Chinese agricultural conglomerate.

Meanwhile their legislature is working hard to undercut the Affordable Care Act: https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2018/03/27/obamacare-aca-mandates-iowa-legislature-governor-kim-reynolds/462087002/

Sad to see our farmers under this degree of mental and financial stress.

Peace!
