That Republican candidate's big loss sounds like it might be a slap in the face for Walker: "Sauk County Circuit Court Judge Michael Screnock is the avowed conservative in the race. For certain, Democratic voters are VERY energized in Wisconsin right now. The disaster that is Trump has awoken the mainline Democrats, and the small but not insignificant bloc of very liberal voters who believed all the tripe about Clinton being in the pocket of Wall Street and therefore not worthy of their vote have, I think, mostly come to their senses. On the other side, I think the traditional deep red counties that ring Milwaukee- we call them "the asshole" - still came out for Screnock, BUT the first time voters who went for Trump in '16 (read: low information mouth breathers and #MAGA men) mostly stayed home. Further compounding problems for Walker is the realization on the part of many voters in counties with ag-based economies that Trump (and by extension other Republicans) are not going to help them. It's not so much that these folks are all coming back to the Democrats (although some are) but rather that they're not turning out in droves to support conservatives.

Summary: to win statewide elections in Wisconsin we (the Democrats) must actually campaign statewide, because the huge margins in Madison and Milwaukee will always be there... cutting into Republican margins outside of the urban areas even by five percent spells doom for Republicans. In my opinion, Hillary's people, and the State party dropped the ball in '16 by ignoring all but two counties in Wisconsin. Heck, Hillary didn't even visit, and everyone knew Wisconsin was competitive. Ditto for the last three Governor's elections- campaigning solely in Milwaukee and Madison is drawing to an inside straight, to use a poker analogy, and not likely to be successful.

This is a day of celebration, so I won't push back too hard on this editorialized version of things, but I have a little bit of talkback. Wisconsin does have a strong liberal voting block that comes out bigger for candidates perceived as transformational. That's why Sanders and Obama won handily here, and Clinton, along with gubernatorial candidates Mary Burke and Tom Barrett (at least in the first race against Walker) struggled a bit with turnout. Pat campaigns and conventional centrist Dems tend to struggle lately in statewide elections.

In any case, we worked hard in this election for statewide and local wins. We rocked it here in Eau Claire County with a strong turnout that put some truly progressive voices on the city council and county board. Give credit to all wings of the party at least for today - intraparty sniping can wait for now. On to the governor's race!!

Wed Apr 4, 2018, 10:42 PM
Apr 2018

I volunteered for and donated to Bernie Sanders in the last Presidential primary and was really disappointed he wasn't our candidate. I agree that Mary Burke was very "meh" although I disagree somewhat on Barrett- although he does have the personality of an old shoe, I think he's pretty progressive most of the time.

Anyway- what I was referring to was the small but significant bloc of voters who either wrote in Sanders- yes I knew a few from my Bernie volunteering days- or worse stayed home because they weren't excited about Hillary. It is obviously anyone's right to vote however they want- or even not to vote at all- but I really think SOME in the liberal wing of the State party- and again I consider myself to be part of that wing- did us all a disservice by not at least voting against Trump. Heck, it took me a good month to get over Bernie's primary loss and really get to work for the general so I get it.

But, yes, let's get that Walker bastard! Time to roll up the sleeves!

were actually also transformational in the scope of what they wanted to accomplish, but both believe our government systems have a good proven soundness that needs to be protected and also substantially improved, updated and built on.

Those trying to run against them had to differentiate by claiming our systems was no longer sound and needed great, fundamental changes. Yet behind the more dramatic rhetoric, they called for the same kind of advances Obama and Clinton were committed to, just in different, more negative language. And if their plans were considered unworkable by economists, that was because in needing to differentiate by promising quicker, larger advances than Clinton did, they called for more than was thought possible in that scenario.

Liberals just won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court by a huge margin

Gov. Scott Walker (R) saw his preferred candidate, Michael Screnock, lose to Rebecca Dallet in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court election Tuesday. |Win McNamee/Getty

snip//

Dallet’s win is yet another example of liberal voter enthusiasm in state and local elections held during the age of Trump. And in Wisconsin specifically, it’s a rare victory for a Democratic Party that’s been beaten again and again in recent years. (The race was technically nonpartisan, but Dallet was the Democrat-backed candidate, and Screnock the conservative-backed one.)

Thu Apr 5, 2018, 06:58 AM
Apr 2018

"which includes parts of St. Louis’s Illinois suburbs, as well as rural counties that have struggled from a downturn in coal mining."

Dems held this district until it went Repub in 2014, but in 2016 voters chose both Trump and the current Republican incumbent by double digits. It went for Dem Sen. Tammy Duckworth by 9 points, though. So a chance, but a tough fight.

In this informative article about Brendan Kelly and his platform, Kelly is seems clearly trying to couch Democratic ideas in a "conservatized" approach, with a strong pitch for the critical role of a strong working center in politics. He advocates big government spending on infrastructure as a proven path to raising wellbeing, which of course it is.

During an interview with The Southern Illinoisan at Brews Brothers Taproom in Murphysboro in late August, he said that Americans are “losing our capacity to govern” as citizens and political leaders are consumed with fighting each other. There are people who have a vested interest in seeing that Americans are distracted by their differences, he said. He cites the flood of money into the political system as part of what has led to the polarization of the parties and inability for political leaders to compromise. ...

Asked to name three major issues important to his candidacy, Kelly said it is a need for infrastructure improvements, addressing the heroin and opioid crisis, which he said includes securing America’s borders and points of entry and adequate access to health care for people who are addicted, and addressing the divide that has brought governing to a near standstill. Here’s a bit of what he had to say on each topic. ...

“People feel frustrated and angry,” he said. “They may have a job but their salary is the same as it was in 1995. But health care and college and child care and utilities have all gone up. At the end of the day, you’ve got nothing left. Infrastructure is literally our road to prosperity,” he said. ...

“Everywhere I go, whether I talk to Democrats or Republicans, there’s a visceral response when you talk about the flood of money into our political system,” he said. Kelly said that “Democracy has been mutated into something it was not intended to be.” He said the money tends to support candidates on both sides of the aisle who are more extreme than the majority of Americas. “There are people who would prefer to have us all fighting each other," he said. ...

Their entire modus operandi is to spread hate, negativity, and vitriol - which includes their continual name-calling and misuse of terms like "far left" as an invective and other nonsense. And he is the biggest recipient of "outside special interest money" from the Kochs.

Except that he blamed the wrong people. It's his puppeteers who have been doing that, and they've been doing it for years. It's how he got into office and remains there, in spite of being the most corrupt governor his state has had in decades. Wisconsonites are finally onto you and your ilk, asshole.

Tonight’s results show we are on the verge of a #BlueWave in WI. Scott Walker is driven by greed & a thirst for power -- we must counter it with free and honest elections. Let’s share our positive story with voters & win in November.

Walker, who through his power grabbing, donor sucking, environment destroying, vote rigging, teacher hating, prevailing wage promoting, union destroying, is claiming that liberals are the ones spewing hatred and that electing liberals will take THE STATE BACKWARDS??.????!,!!!! !
Is this joker living in a shoebox? Walker has done nothing but screw the electorate of WI.
What an idiot. His time is coming, and none too soon.

when too many from the Left just didn't bother to turn out and vote. As a result, the entire state government flipped from Democratic control to Republican control and because it was a census year the GOP got to gerrymander the state in 2011.
Then the Law of Unintended Consequences came to bite us in the ass with Walker's recall election which didn't happen until June of 2012 and with Koch money he built a powerful political machine.
Unlike 2014, Democrats had better nominate a candidate who has more experience than just serving on a school board because no matter what is happening now this is not going to be a walk in the park to get rid of Walker. The Left is finally recognizing and using their superpower--showing up to vote. When it comes to voter suppression via voter ID let me suggest an organization that should already exist get some of those millions of dollars donated to Democratic causes and help anybody who needs an ID to vote to get one no matter if it's helping them to get a birth certificate or just a ride to the DMV. That's practical action in confronting voter suppression.

waving the boogeyman of special out of state secret groups in front of the Repugnants voting base to see if will give them something to rally around as he cannot exactly brag about his performance in office as its been dismal.
