The full list of US products that China is planning to hit with tariffs

Last edited Wed Apr 4, 2018, 11:08 AM - Edit history (1)

Below is the full list of products that are set to be subject to duties.

  • Yellow soybean

  • Black soybean

  • Corn

  • Cornflour

Other biggies on there are tobacco since China has a huge smoker population, beef, orange juice, and wheat... Plus stuff related to plastics.

Edit to add - this was the list from the 2nd round of tariffs imposed by China. They had a smaller set last Sunday that included items like pork and aluminum scrap, etc.

Interesting snippet from a WaPo article that sortof confirms what others have posted too -

China fires back at Trump with the threat of tariffs on 106 U.S. products, including soybeans

By Emily Rauhala April 4 at 10:06 AM

    <...>

Trump’s figure did not factor in U.S. exports to China. According to U.S. government figures, the trade deficit in goods between the two countries in 2017 was about $375 billion. When services are included, the overall U.S. trade deficit with China was about $336 billion. Though the dollar amounts targeted by both sides are similar — $50 billion — the focus on U.S. soybean exports by China could have a particularly big impact on the United States.

Soybeans are the top U.S. agricultural export to China, and U.S. soybean farmers and their allies fought hard to prevent the tariffs — something Zhu noted in the news conference. The current U.S. ambassador to China, Terry Branstad, is the former governor of Iowa, a state that could be hit hard. In March, representatives from the Iowa Soybean Association visited him in China to plead their case, according to a Chinese report.

Christopher Balding, an associate professor at the HSBC Business School in Shenzhen, said that comparing the U.S. and Chinese lists showed China’s willingness to target products such as soybeans, automobiles and planes that could create political problems for Trump. “Even though the numbers between China and the U.S. are comparable, it seems clear that China is trying to twist the knife,” he said, “This is a warning that ‘we are willing to fight harder and inflict more pain that you are.’”

The goal may be to get U.S. voters to stop Trump from pressing ahead. Farm states generally backed Trump in the 2016 election, and their exports could be hurt. “China is stirring up U.S. farmers to put pressure on the White House,” said Shen Dingli, deputy dean of the Institute of International Affairs at Shanghai's Fudan University.

US outputs can go to markets formerly served by Argentina and Brazil.

The big commodity companies like ADM, Bunge, Cargill, etc. will make a fortune trading these around.

It's interesting that the Chinese can get to $50 billion in imports from the US with only 106 items, while the US had to identify 1300 items to reach $50 billion in imports from China.

It doesn't appear to include large aircraft > 45,000 kg. The Boeing 737s weigh just under that, but their 777s and 787s weigh more.

just do their huge population, is theoretically the largest consumer market in the world... although realistically, the U.S. actually is for the time being due to China only slowly raising wages for their workers to even afford the stuff that they export.

However unfortunately, the oligarchs here will increasingly make sure that we end up with the equivalent of Chinese wages, unable to afford anything we produce or import either.

It's going to be one hell of a trade war. It may not be shock and awe and make for good TV viewing, but the damage and fallout will be spectacular. And, in my view, the Chinese will not suffer or lose a night's sleep over this. And my guess is that they have a response to every raise in tariffs by the moron-in-chief.

Now let's see if the media in the US will cover the fallout, and not just from one farmer or one company. I'm talking about comprehensive reporting nationwide on the impact on trump voters. Every day. To the point that fox news and sinclair will look like clowns (even more) by reporting that all is just dandy in farm country, over at Harley-Davidson, in the auto biz, etc., etc., etc.

Aside of trying to gut SNAP in the Farm Bill in 2012, which delayed it until 2013, it was delayed too because the teabaggers suddenly discovered all the other "earmarks" in there.

The Fight Over Food Stamps and Farm Subsidies

    By Eric Pianin
    April 25, 2012

Congress appears poised to begin overhauling long-standing agricultural price support programs, including the elimination of unconditional subsidies to farmers, in an effort to help lower their overall costs and eliminate some of the inequities in the program.

The government currently hands out between $15 billion and $20 billion a year in aggie subsidies, depending on the prices of crops and the level of disaster payments. More than 90 percent of agricultural subsidies go to farmers of five crops – wheat, corn, soybeans, rice, and cotton. More than a million farmers and landowners – including millionaires and billionaires – receive subsidies, but the payments are heavily tilted toward the largest producers.

These generous benefits have become almost impossible to justify as farm income has risen to historic levels and consumers face higher prices at the grocery store. Congress has until the end of September to act before the current five-year legislation expires.

On Wednesday, the Senate Agriculture Committee begins marking up new legislation that would replace current direct subsidies with various insurance programs that would aid farmers in the event of bad weather or natural disasters, including a new “shallow loss” program that would cover modest yields or declines in prices. Farmers would receive crop insurance subsidies for more catastrophic losses – a measure welcomed by the farm community but criticized by some watchdog groups that warn this could result in the government spending even more to cover crop losses.
