By Kate Riga | April 4, 2018 3:49 pm
Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen announced at the White House press briefing on Wednesday that the Trump administration intends to send members of the National Guard to bolster security at the United States southern border.
The President has directed the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security to work together with the governors to deploy the National Guard to the southwest border to assist border patrol, she said. The President will be signing a proclamation to that effect today.
She did not disclose how many troops would be sent, nor the cost of the endeavor, but asserted that they would be deployed immediately. She added that, at this point in the plan, the troops are intended to operate in a support, not enforcement, capacity.

I don't think Trump has the slightest clue what the hell he's doing. There's going to be a lot of guardsmen standing around picking their noses with nothing to do.

These folks did not join the Guard to be called up and deployed for stupidity.

(2,795 posts)confidence that their supreme leader is doing so much to keep them safe - yet quite paranoid and frightened that a directive like this must mean there is an army of murderous illegals plotting to cross the border, killing and raping and stealing their jobs.

A recent law, the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act of 2007, expanded the presidents authority to activate guard units, eliminating the need for approval from the state governor.
Who knew...

(29,565 posts)I suppose he can federalize the National Guard. I would expect some states to resist/refuse and other Governors to kiss his orange anus.

(2,857 posts)This has been my carrot from day 1. Let the NG patrol and keep the talk of building the fiasco of a wall down to nothing till Trump is gone.
My dad was in NG over 30 years. He built the airports at the Panama Canal. He would have done a great job keeping the border roads hot.

(4,268 posts)Now dump can lie about having stopped an invasion and since nobody in the right wing media will fact check him he'll be the "strong leader" who took matters into his own hands because the Democrats want open borders yadda yadda yadda.

(3,479 posts)Thanks to this move by Gump, numerous pundits have pointed out that border apprehendions are at a 47-year low. The base may not be getting this information, but the other 70% of eligible voters are.
