Oklahoma governor compares teachers to greedy teenagers.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- For the second day, thousands of Oklahoma teachers marched at the state capitol. Inside the rotunda, educators, and hundreds of their students demanded an increase in school funding.

On Tuesday, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin signed a bill giving teacher-support staff, like teachers' aides and janitors, a $1,250 raise. Last week, she signed a measure that gave teachers a $6,000 pay raise, but only added an additional $50 million to school funding. Teachers were asking for $200 million more.

"Teachers want more," Fallin said. "But it's kind of like having a teenage kid that wants a better car."

Teachers turned into lobbyists, crowding the hallways and waiting in line to meet with almost every state lawmaker. Liz Hoggett and her fellow teachers from Norman, Oklahoma, public schools went office to office, leaving notes and letters for legislators, asking for more school funding. They waited more than an hour to meet with their state senator, but he had to leave for a roll call vote. The third generation teacher says she's frustrated, but doesn't plan to give up.

Everyone who can leave, will. If you love the look of your state, move to the eastern suburbs of Denver.

Colorado has turned purple and is trending blue...I don’t think you want to add people from Kansas and Oklahoma to the population.

to do what a teacher does on any given day for the same pay and with the same support and education. SILENCE! That is who will step up to take my offer. They know damn well what teachers do with less than nothing. I know that when superintendents, school board members, principals/admin and parents were ever invited to do our jobs with our exact everything NONE of them accepted the invitation after one or two of them did and then they spread the word...do not repeat their mistake and DO NOT take any teacher up on that dare ever! They failed miserably! On paper everything LOOKS like it can/should work perfectly but in reality it NEVER does.

paint with a broad brush.

I spent 24 years in the classroom before moving into administration (principal). I'd been on both sides of the table and my number one objective was to ALWAYS do what was best FOR THE KIDS!

Not all Republicans are as nasty as Turtle McConnell and not all Democrats are as noble and spectacular as President Obama.

Please focus on the objective and avoid generalities that create more defensiveness from those whose support is needed.

Remember, we're the good guys!

As a teacher and union rep my experience is in the classroom and as a rep. The school board doesn't
care about anything but the almighty dollar. The same from the state. Schools are a business and that is a how it has been. They always say "but we care about the children" when they care about the dollar signs more than anything. They throw out new school books that are 1 year old due to political kickbacks etc. They insist that you teach so and so at a specific time like robots when it does not work. Teachers have invited them to come and SHOW us in our own class rooms how they want us to do it and the few that have tried have not been able to teach what they ordered us to do. When we called the local news to show them the "old" new school books in the dumpsters they blocked the TV cameras. This was while we didn't get a raise in 5 years, students were 48 out of 50 states as far as per student state funds and expenditures, 50% staff and support staff being permanently cut, .... This is happening everywhere in different specific ways but none the less it is happening. This is not Dem or Repub it is the American way education is treated for a long time. Teachers are disposable and a dime a dozen. Do NOT go into teaching!

an ugly story and I'm sorry that you have experienced it - and sorry for your fellow educators and community.

It is a shame that too many care more about how they can avoid ANY taxes and not be concerned about the future of our country.

I had a poster on the door of my office (principal's office) before I retired (2007):

After we rebuild Iraq........
Can we rebuild our schools?

Think that everything outside of the rich elites and the war machine are a bunch of greedy teens that want a hand out. They see education, science, infrastructure and helping people as taking away money that could go to bombs and the elites.

How sick.

Maybe if we classify everyone who is not rich a fetus, so that they would get the same support as fetus' now.
