I met a guy from a small town in Iowa who is a D.A. and is now running for State Auditor. It may seem like a nothing post, but apparently in states with a lot of agriculture, it is a big deal.
He is 35, looks 18, is smart and a dedicated Democrat, currently a D.A. in Des Moines chasing corruption and fraud. He told me outright he hopes to use doing the high profile Iowa State Auditor's job well as a springboard for national office--the House or maybe even the Senate. Chuck Grassley is getting on in years, and his brand of blind Trumpism isn't playing well locally these days. Joni Ernst is, of course, an outright moron.
His name is Rob Sand. He is conservative with a small "c," not as defined in Republicanese or Foxese, i.e. he is measured in his responses and very much looks the part of what someone from the coasts might imagine a small town rural Iowa Democrat might look like. But make no mistake. He is one of us, and it will be people like Rob Sand that will make or break our chances to take back both houses of Congress. I hope to be visiting him at his swearing-in ceremony at the House or at the Senate within ten years. My preference might be for someone more like Tom Harkin, but I think the preference of the voters of Iowa will be someone more like Rob Sand. Apparently, he has made it to the national Republican radar, too, as the national Republicans are starting to pour money into the coffers of his Republican opponent--for STATE AUDITOR !! That wouldn't be the case if Rob's assessment--that the Auditor's job in Iowa is of high enough profile to indeed be a springboard to national office--were in error. It seems Rob has former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack's support, too.
Rob Sand is someone to keep an eye on, especially if his race for Iowa State Auditor is successful. It is winning steps like this that Republicans got the chance to do the country as much damage as they have up to now. Time to fight back with the same tactics--from the ground up.

(14,167 posts)I hope he wins. Iowa is a really tough state for a Democrat. But after Doug Jones (and these Chinese tariffs), the state may be ready to elect a Democrat.

I realize that's kind of a dumb thing to say, in some respects
ETA: oh wait, OP already mentioned it so I guess it's Okay

(54,403 posts)Some places, it just pays to look the part. Rob's looks reassure some people--completely devoid of all logic, but if just being good and well-intentioned won't do the trick alone, then you go with what plays locally, and he IS local.

(149,627 posts)I agree: from the ground up is the way to go, the way Rob Sand is doing it.
Do you have a link for his campaign? I will look too, in the meantime.
Best of luck to him!
Never mind, I found the link and I sent him some money!

(54,403 posts)I hope his fundraising allows him a somewhat more sophisticated web site. He will be in DC next week, meeting with former Clinton budget hawk, Alice Rivlin. He jokingly invited me to lunch, figuring I wouldn't be within 4000 miles of there, but as fate would have it, I WILL be in Washington then, so we actually will have lunch. Maybe I can get him to join DU!

(149,627 posts)He's also on Facebook, and I sent him a friend request. No answer yet, of course; I think he hasn't been there long.
I thought the website looked good. I got a good sense of who he is and how he thinks. He looks great.
Have a great lunch with him!

(26,623 posts)state legislators, red, red, red. The propaganda is strong in my rural area.. lots of fear, lots of guns and lots of god. It's tough, but my County Dems are hanging in there. The racism is disturbing. I didn't see much of it before trump, now people seem proud of it.
