Sarah Sanders Touts Rasmussen Poll Numbers To Prove That Trump Is More Credible Than Comey

by Justin Baragona | 11:02 am, April 15th, 2018

Ahead of the airing of his hotly anticipated primetime interview with former FBI Director James Comey, ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos spoke to White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. And during her appearance on Sunday’s This Week, the press secretary parroted much of President Donald Trump’s recent attacks on the ex-FBI chief while pointing to an outlier poll to tout Trump’s credibility.

After Sanders began the interview by pointing to Comey’s remarks that Hillary Clinton’s then-likely presidential victory was on his mind when he released his infamous late-October 2016 letter revealing the re-opening of the email server investigation, the ABC host asked her if she really wanted to compare credibility between Comey and Trump.

“Are you sure you want to be engaged in a credibility contest with James Comey?” Stephanopoulos asked. “I think the [Washington Post] cited more than 2,000 instances where the president and the White House have made false statements. Our new poll shows that Americans, by a pretty wide margin, think James Comey has more credibility than Donald Trump.”

Sanders pushed back, citing the president’s approval rating in the Republican-leaning Rasmussen daily tracking poll, which currently shows Trump at 50 percent. “I have to disagree,” she declared. “There’s a daily poll that has the president at 50%. Better than President Obama at this point. At the end of the day, this president will be judged on probably two big things. The economy and national security.”

Mind you, the poll number Stephanopoulos was pointing to showed who respondents thought was more believable — Trump or Comey. Meanwhile, Sanders hyped up a completely different metric in a poll that differs greatly from other polling firms job approval numbers. (Trump’s approval rating in both HuffPost and Real Clear Politics polling averages stands at around 42 percent.) Shortly after Sanders’ interview aired, the president took to Twitter to pat himself on the back over the recent Rasmussen poll.
