(25,111 posts)What a beautiful moment.
It restored some humanity in this inhumane country of the GOPs.

(40,307 posts)Macron has only been President of France for less that 2 years, and I believe this is his 2nd (or 3rd?) visit to the US as President. So maybe he came here previously, and possibly he met John Lewis on an earlier visit? I don't really know, but it's obvious that these two men already know each other.
It's nice that he shows respect and affection for our greatest living civil rights leader.

(32,640 posts)but Lewis has been booed unapologetically by self-described progressives, while certain self-described progressive leaders stood by and remained silent concerning this behavior by their supporters.

It's a fact of our history. The French have always welcomed our black artists with open arms.
This long hug is not surprising to me.
It's likely that, even today, a majority of white adults and kids still don't know that there is a huge body of African American literature, dance and art that is American culture.
But the French know.

Nina Simone comes to mind. But she was not alone.

(114 posts)I remember hearing that in World War II, the European armed forces were integrated, while the U.S. forces were still segregated, and many African American soldiers felt that they were treated with far more respect by the European soldiers that the white American soldiers, and this was one of the things that led to the demand for integrating the U.S. armed forces.

(53,410 posts)There was the long look of complete pride and love for Mr. Lewis. No one does that who doesnt absolutely mean it from the heart. I think it touched John Lewis heart very deeply.
I know it touched mine and brought tears to my eyes.

(14,292 posts)Thrill of a lifetime. Ive mentioned it here before, what a speaker he is when just talking off the cuff at events that arent strictly somber, he is belly busting funny! He had us all rolling in the aisles with marvelous anecdotes. This is a side of the man we dont see much on television, and thats a shame, because his wit and humor is one of a kind.

(14,292 posts)It was years ago, so I only wish I could remember his exact stories, but yes, it was that type of home spun humor. I was at a convention in Florida with some pretty A list speakers, including Obama, but John Lewis blew them all away. He was not scheduled as a main speaker at the evening dinner, only in one of the smaller rooms in the afternoon, so the mood was more informal and relaxed. I got a front row seat and I was in happy tears from the second sentence in. People kept stopping at the door to see what all the joy and laughter was about, so soon the room was packed! He just has that effect on people.
