Why? A federal judge just sided with Michael Cohen

A federal judge just sided with Michael Cohen on the biggest issue in his case — and added another wildcard

Legal experts had told Business Insider that Wood would be more likely to select one of the government's nominees, who were retired judges from the Southern District of New York. Cohen's team submitted names of former federal prosecutors.
Wood's selection, however, pleased Cohen's legal team.

"We embrace the court's order," said Stephen Ryan, Cohen's attorney, calling Jones a "wonderful choice."
Both sides debated in court on Thursday whether the special master should have a deadline for completing the review.
The hearing became heated at times, with Trump's and Cohen's lawyers arguing about whose turn it was to speak.

She selected a retired federal judge who is well-known and well-respected by both sides. Judge Jones was picked by over any of the nominees of either parties. Judge Jones was appointed to the federal bench by Bill Clinton, btw.

The Cohen/Trump side did not get what they wanted. They wanted the files back so they could then release only what they wanted to release.

if I trust judge Jones yet, I hope she works out fine. But I don't see why they just wouldn't use a "taint team" like they always do. And also, why are Cohen's lawyers so happy about it?

Not sure where you're getting your information, but the use of taint teams is actually somewhat controversial and can give rise to legal challenges that delay proceedings, which is why the use of a special master can be the better approach.

has to decide issues that would be too time consuming for the assigned judge. And Cohen's lawyers are happy because the judge didn't pick one of the people recommended by the prosecution. There's nothing strange at all about this, and there's no reason not to trust the special master, a well-respected retired federal judge who was appointed to the bench by Bill Clinton.

Both Cohen and the government submitted names to Judge Wood.

Judge Wood selected a Special Master who wasn't on either list.

She didn't "side" with Cohen.

FFS.

The Cohan and Trump teams were still arguing that they should be allowed to review all documents first and this demand was rejected.
