He realized that his mistakes could and would cause a very important issue to be smothered in AM Radio and Fox News bullshit.
His stepping down demonstrated that the issues are far more important than any individual.

He was accused by multiple independent women of groping. He admitted he mistreated women. Franken didn't get eaten by liberals.
