U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders will be stopping in Philadelphia and in two other Pennsylvania locations this weekend to stump for Democratic candidates ahead of the midterm primaries.
The 2016 presidential candidate recently endorsed Braddock Mayor John Fetterman for lieutenant governor, and the two will speak at a rally for Fetterman at City Hall on Friday, May 4.
According to a press release from the senator's campaign team, Sanders is making the trip to "highlight the importance of energizing and electing progressives in Pennsylvania and all across the country in 2018."
Things got awkward during the 2016 election when Fetterman, running for the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, routinely and proudly voiced his support for Sanders, but Sanders didn't return the favor and ultimately admitted to not really knowing Fetterman.
They appear to have gotten more familiar since then, as Sanders has picked Fetterman out a field of five Democratic candidates for lieutenant governor, including incumbent Mike Stack.
Friday's rally will take place on the North Apron of City Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. While the event is free and open to the public and a ticket isn't required, it is recommended that you RSVP online.

(22,573 posts)Belonging to a party and being a part of one is a commitment, like a marriage, even when it is flawed and imperfect. Sanders hides behind his "I" with the pretense of being all noble but I don't buy it.
When the 2020 presidential campaign begins I'm sure I will have a number of Democrats from which to choose, but there will be no Democrat called "Bernie Sanders" unless he is just using the party as his vehicle to the presidency. If he is a candidate I will work hard for a Democrat running who has dedicated themselves to the Democratic Party and when they have run for public office have run as a Democrat.

I think Stack might be toast due to issues between him and Wolf and stuff related to allegations of staff mistreatment. The governor pulled his security detail.

(128,962 posts)Believe it or not, Nina is the one who I have been getting the most correspondence from and she has some strong progressive views and experience (used to head up the Philly NOW chapter). Plus she is a scientist (PhD to boot) and was our mayor's deputy. She was originally going to run for PA-1 (Bob Brady's seat since he is stepping down) but when they redrew the lines, she opted to go another route - PA Lt. Governor.
Since she is is here in Philly but is running for state-wide office, her campaign has been very strongly grassroots to get known across the state. If you look on Ballotpedia, other than the current Lt. Gov Mike Stack, she was the only one to put some bio info there. Both she and Stack are coming out of Philadelphia.
If she manages to win, she would be the first Asian-American Lt. Governor (she is an immigrant from Bangladesh). I really like her background and positions and it would give her some experience in the political landscape to run for other higher offices in the future.
