Obama, Bush to give eulogies at McCain's eventual funeral: report
By Max Greenwood - 05/05/18 05:08 PM EDT

Former Presidents George W. Bush and Obama are expected to deliver eulogies at Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) eventual funeral, NBC News reported Saturday.

The news that the two former presidents plan to speak at the event comes amid revelations that those close to McCain have informed the White House that they plan to have Vice President Pence attend the senator's funeral — but not President Trump.

The New York Times reported earlier on Saturday that McCain's funeral is expected to take place at the Washington National Cathedral.

The 81-year-old McCain is currently undergoing treatment for an aggressive form of brain cancer that he was diagnosed with last year.

In an audio excerpt from his forthcoming memoir, "The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations," aired by NPR this week, McCain acknowledges that he doesn't "know how much longer I'll be here."

The senator has often had a contentious and rocky relationship with Trump. In excerpts from his upcoming memoir, McCain offers a sharp rebuke of the president, questioning his convictions as a leader and hitting him for his attacks on refugees and the press.

"I'm not sure what to make of President Trump's convictions," he writes.

Sorry he's sick. Hard to imagine thinking your time is imminently finite. I'm glad he set boundaries for the speakers and mourners. Time marches on.

The Bush family didn't want him at Barbara's funeral (although he wouldn't have been expected to be at a former FL funeral). McCain doesn't want him at his own funeral. Queen Elizabeth won't give him a state visit with the pomp and golden carriages he wanted. He is not welcome in decent society.

My guess is themes could include common decency, integrity and honor, among other things. Qualities the Orange Maggot knows nothing about.

Despite the fact that he was a very good political tactician to his own ends on occasion, I think McCain genuinely GENUINLEY doesn't have a racist bone in his body, and respected the hell out of Barrack Obama as an example of what an American (of any background, creed or color) CAN BE.

I can respect and honor that aspect of who he was.
And I think Obama would say the same (and has) of McCains service to his Country.

It sounds like McCain isn't doing very well. But it takes guts to ask the person who won over you for president to deliver your eulogy.

Maybe seeing his mortality approaching has made him see where he went wrong. Too bad it was too late to not vote in favor of repealing the ACA a year ago.

McCain likely compares President Obama to the current occupant of the White House and realizes that President Obama is not only a good person, but is a true patriot who did his best to do what was right for the country and ALL of it's citizens and guests.

to give a heartfelt, respectful and healing eulogy for any Statesman regardless of their political differences. He will be prepared, he will deliver a dignified and honorary speech. He will be empathetic and caring to loved ones. There is really no current leader in the U.S. that I would trust more with such a sacred request.

Despite of my frequent differences with him, McCain could be pretty rational, I don't think that he is doing any of this just to get attention on him, things look real, he likely sees that end really close.
