It is not finding the one right person that we think can save us from ourselves. Its us.

The former first lady talked with actress Tracee Ellis Ross at the United State Of Women Summit on Saturday, covering a range of topics. Obama didnt mince words when the discussion turned to politics and a voice from the crowd interrupted to ask why she wouldnt seek an elected post.
Stop that, said Obama, who since her husbands presidential term ended early last year has frequently said she has no plans to run for anything herself.
She told her audience that society has yet to understand her husbands famed campaign slogan, Yes, We Can. Obama spoke about the need for women to come together as a community before looking to one individual woman to solve their problems, and said in that sense she is no different than Hillary Clinton.
When I hear people say, You run, its part of the problem, she said. Weve got a lot of work to do before were focused on the who. Because were the who.
We are the answer, she continued. All of us here in the room are the answer to our own problems ― it is not finding the one right person that we think can save us from ourselves. Its us. Its us.

She made a veiled reference to President Donald Trump and his defeat of Clinton in 2016, saying, In light of the last election, Im concerned about us as women. What is going on in our heads that we let that happen? What are girls dreaming about when the most qualified person running was a woman and look what we did?

(12,051 posts)would be a rain of shit down upon your head. Look how they treated her when she started an organic garden and urged people to eat healthily! They acted all outraged, like she was gonna come into your house and take all your junk food.
I hope the Obamas take plenty of time off, go live a good part of the year in other countries, and write blistering memoirs.

Michelle Obama owes us nothing. I hope she does what fulfills her.

(28,151 posts)Complete blockades in Congress. Apathetic support from the left. (*yawn* Mid-terms? Nah.) But yeah, throw us another 8 so we can sit on our asses and leave it to you (again)!
Selfish bastards.

(31,261 posts)I am willing to bet the audience person that asked that question voted for Jill Stein or wrote in Bernie, to show them, now that person wants Michelle to sacrifice her happiness only to get the same shit her husband got from some on the left and conservatives. Why should she sacrifice, she has one daughter that is preparing for her working life and a second daughter who will soon be doing the same? Why pamper us instead of mentoring her daughter's as they complete the journey to adulthood?

(31,261 posts)People look for a savior and are disappointed when their chosen one don't meet their expectations. I really wish that people like Nina Turner, Susan Sarandon, Cornell West, Ralph Nader would shut the hell up and study history back to the advent of the written word. What they will see is that true change has always been a long, often painful process. Their tendency is to look at one spot change and say that happened fast, I see the same lack of perspective from some writing here on DU - no, the changes did not happen fast, most were more than a century in the making, all took longer than 60 years.

(31,261 posts)Why? To have many on the left abandon her and fellow democrats like they did her husband? People want a benevolent dictator (no such thing ever in history), they can't accept that progress comes only through a grinding process that requires both patience and determination.
