My grandson turned 9 today

His younger sister got him a Magic 8 Ball

I picked them both up from school today, and he showed me his present. As I was driving, I heard him ask, "Is the world going to end next year?"
Their parents limit their exposure to news and politics. Unless it is from a video game, I don't know why he would even think his world might end.

I despair.

When I was his age we all knew about the possibility of nuclear war. And no matter how much his parents limit his exposure to news and politics, he goes to school. Kids say things.

He didn't say it loud enough for me to hear it clearly.

I guess the world ends every day for someone. I read a book years ago discussing several events, from the Holocaust to the earthquake in Lisbon,Portugal that seemed like the end of the world according to eyewitnesses.

The kids are allowed to watch The History Channel and other pseudo scientific channels, so he probably is getting things from there. If I watch with them, I do a lot of fact-checking lol
