4. If Haspel isn't confirmed, and Trump nominates someone worse

Don't confirm that nominee, either. If Trump is having trouble finding a suitable nominee, perhaps he could consult with the Democrats to find someone who believes in the Constitution and the rights of all. It shouldn't be that tough; certainly not as tough as finding someone even worse than good Nazi Haspel, who was just following orders.

5. Cotton is a sitting Republican Senator. Every Republican and

a fair number of Democrats will vote for him. Trump is not going to work with democrats on anything.

6. Tie up a confirmation vote in procedural knots

Oppose "unanimous consent" on everything. McConnell's done it several times when he doesn't get his way. No reason the Democrats can't object each and every time a Senator asks unanimous consent to proceed.

I think taking a hard, principled stand for the Constitution and our treaty obligations would be quite defensible to the American people, particularly when the opposing side is "But we really wanna torture people!"
