Manchin Dances Around Criticizing Blankenship In Pair Of Interviews

By Cameron Joseph | May 10, 2018 2:28 pm

For a guy who once said ex-con coal baron Don Blankenship had “blood on his hands,” Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has been notably restrained while discussing the former GOP Senate candidate since Tuesday’s primary.

In a pair of TV interviews following Blankenship’s primary loss to West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey (R), Manchin refused to directly criticize Blankenship for his racially charged attacks against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) — while favorably comparing him to Morrisey as the true West Virginian (Morrisey moved there from New Jersey a decade ago).

Manchin also wouldn’t directly attack Blankenship for his role in failing to prevent the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine that killed 29 people in 2010. And he refused to directly say whether he thought Blankenship’s ads attacking McConnell’s “China family” were racist, instead dodging the question in an interview with NBC News while offering tepid criticism.

“I’d like to think that wasn’t, the terms he used, and how he used them, I would never take that course. And if Don felt that he was explaining it from his upbringing, the culture that he comes from in West Virginia. And Don’s on that Kentucky-West Virginia border. I don’t know, I can’t say, I haven’t heard that before,” Manchin said in a meandering answer. “There’s Italian-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Japanese-Americans, you know we’re all ethnic of some derivative. But the way it was said, it was taken in a connotation that might not have been flattering to a person who’s a proud American, no matter what their descent is.”

A Republican counterpart in the senate, almost 94% white, and very poor. Easy to piss in from the outside.

Trump damn near pulled 70% of them.

But I don't have to like them!
Many share your feelings. Sadly, they use their "feelings" as an excuse to undermine and sabotage. The personal pride they take in demonstrating their political purity is more important, apparently, than having a majority in the Senate. Hashtag sad.

Please, please, PLEASE do better. Of course I want Manchin to win another term in the Senate, but by 2024, please try to come up with someone else, can you West Virginia Democrats?

Hopefully the dynamics will be different in 2024 and even WV will be open to better. Huffington Post had a statistic where Manchin votes for the Trump agenda over 60% of the time. Not sure where they got that from, but he does annoy me a lot even for being a red state Dem.

He beat her by 30 points. My county (probably the most progressive in the state) he only beat her by around 900 votes.
Swearingen got more votes that Morrissey, the Republican candidate.
Manchin had better campaign well, and so far, saying he's supporting Haspel...well, I hope I'm not living here in November, because I don't want to vote for a torture apologist.

I don't live in WV like you do. Is Manchin the best we can do there? The fact we had a progressive challenger at all there is encouraging.

It's a common occurrence that states elect Democrats like Manchin, outsiders complain that they are little better than Republicans, and state residents protest "notallmystatevoters." Win or lose in November (and I hope Manchin wins), West Virginia Democrats need to get about the business of changing the culture there. Who knows? If the political climate changes sufficiently, maybe Manchin will grow some courage and start acting like a Democrat as well as running as one.

to not be just a different degree of supporting the coal companies. I know it is a fact of life there for now. But challenging the coal companies to make things better for labor and not seeing protecting the environment as a detriment are things we can do.

If the political culture of West Virginia is going to change, King Coal needs to be dethroned, and other considerations need to be promoted into that vacuum.

What a cowardly strategy. He obviously knows his constituents better than any of us, and if a racist strategy helps him to win, what does that tell us about WV?
