Eddie Devine voted for President Donald Trump because he thought he would be good for American business. Now, he says, the Trump administrations restrictions on seasonal foreign labor may put him out of business.
I feel like Ive been tricked by the devil, said Devine, owner of Harrodsburg-based Devine Creations Landscaping. I feel so stupid.
Devine says it has been years since he could find enough dependable, drug-free American workers for his $12-an-hour jobs mowing and tending landscapes for cemeteries, shopping centers and apartment complexes across Central Kentucky.
So for years he has hired 20 seasonal workers, mostly from Guatemala, through the U.S. Labor Departments H2-B guest worker program. Importing these workers for a few months cost him an additional $18,000 in fees and expenses beyond their wages, which must be the same as he pays American workers. But thats the only way he could serve his customers.

(22,114 posts)Who is going to pick our apples oranges and other fruits? Who's going to butcher our cattle and pigs, etc.? Who's going to provide the maid service at home for my elderly mom and dad? Who's going to put a new roof on my house? And the list of services that we rely on these workers to provide us on every facet of American life is constantly expanding as the American economy continues to expand.
Although under RUMP, I've yet to make a determination that the economy will continue to expand, RUMP has done too many anti-business initiatives (stops mergers because RUMP didn't like them, no more cheap or minimum wage employees to do those jobs that a lot of Americans won't do, mocked a lot of our trading partners and trade practices, caused a drop in the value of the dollar, caused our interest rates to start increasing (or at least, accelerate the rate of increase in rates), has started a whole cascade of lawsuits fighting the federal government on many fronts in response to these arbitrary and contrary decisions, etc., etc., etc.)...in short, a mess.
My gut feeling is that the headwinds are very definitely against us/the American economy mainly and solely because RUMP is not making intelligent decisions based on fact, but instead, personal grudges and the like.

Somehow I don't think the focus would be on whether or not Hilary voters were happy or unhappy.

But I guess that kind of demonizing only applies to Democrats.

(10,828 posts)Economic pain for the MAGA crowd. This man, Eddie Devine, wasn't tricked by the devil. He was tricked by his own delusion that the Trumpster was anything more than a conman, a perpetual grifter who has left damage on everything he touches. And now it's touched Mr. Devine. As it's touching those crabbers in Maryland I talked about in an earlier thread. The very people who voted for this clown are the most vulnerable. And the Trumpster? He doesn't care. He's convinced himself that people like Devine and the farmers who will be crushed by stupid trade policy will . . . suck it up.
Eddie Devine won't be alone in his disillusion and economic insecurity. The scales are beginning to fall from many people's eyes. Add the ongoing evidence of gross malfeasance and fraud to the economic pain the Trumpsters are delivering and this disbelief will turn to anger, even rage.
Trump and his enablers will be lucky to get out of DC without a tar and feathering. They deserve that and more.
