In Louisiana, they voted for this President & government. In return 30,000 elderly will be evicted from nursing homes this Thursday. Their funding cut to pay for tax cuts that benefit the rich. How we spend our money reflects our values. ARE THESE OUR VALUES?

(5,754 posts)When I was growing up in the 1950s, most of the relatives we went to visit in small towns in Kentucky and Tennessee has a older relative living in one of the front rooms. Medicaid pays for nursing home care for a lot of folks, and I guess that will be over now.

(16,076 posts)I'll bet that some of those effected may not even have living relatives!
The next time some Trump supporter tells me how they're a "good" christian...it'll take all of my self control to keep from punching them in the throat!!!

(31,989 posts)I've seen many folks in nursing homes (from when my mom was in and out of them about 10 years ago) who had no living relatives. Usually they were in their 90s. What in the world does a soul do in that situation?

(68 posts)Have you wondered what the eventual trickle-down effect might be? If the family/caregiver of those kicked out of nursing homes are unqualified or unable (job demands, etc.) to care appropriately, and death results . . . will they then be prosecuted for neglect? abuse? manslaughter?

(62,444 posts)Or did you mean they will each be assigned to a home in Kentucky if they do not have any children able to accommodate them?

(9,981 posts)Many elderly are in nursing homes, and their families cannot care for them. Others may have serious diseases requiring dialysis or other regular treatments. And, yes, some of these can be done on an out-patient basis, but someone has to get them to the treatment center. Many of the family members most likely work at low-paying jobs that do not give them time away from work for personal errands. Plus, who is at home with the elderly person, who probably cannot be left alone? So now we have a situation where a poor person has to quit a job that qualifies him or her for their onw health insurance through Medicaid in order to care for an aging relativewhich now kicks that person off Medicaid because of work requirements. I do nbelieve t ever want to hear another Republican claim that they are the party of family values. They are the party of death and destruction of our future. This is disgusting in so many ways that those oh-so-virtuous Republicans claiming to be Christians should hang their heads in shame.

(28,941 posts)1. Equipment, hospital bed, lift chairs, special mattresses, wheel chairs etc. The expense is hair raising
2. Medical training which is seldom had or given, everything from spotting potential problems to proper use of medications to proper lifting/carrying techniques.
3. Many times the children of the elderly are in late middle age or onset old age and they are not always in the best of health themselves. The reason my mother went into a nursing home is her doctor informed me if she didn't my health or lack thereof and my exhaustion would put me in the hospital. I was on my own as many are.
4. Home care giving wears you out. You can't get away from it; it's with you every moment, day and night. Even going to get food is risky; when I return from the store I found my mother on the floor unconscious.

(21,646 posts)What if there are no relatives ? 24 hrcare needed ?
These are the answers given during the recession to homeless too . Go live with your parent/ kids
I am sure the people agreeing with this LA action have thought this way too and have no grief
" Oh they will just live at a relative's home now that is all this means
I mean I have a home and have kids with homes, everyone I know does, so everyone
else must! "

(8,254 posts)Medicare doesn't do long term care, and will only cover part to the ER expense incurred when they are dying, the balance, the hospitals will take a loss on, forcing them to raise the price of their services, which bring forth an increase in Insurance premiums to be pass to all of us who are blessed to have it......

(19,808 posts)Is bad enough to keep them in the hospital 3 full days,
They get maybe 100 days of medicare. Dont plan on living past that though.

(14,490 posts)Louisiana will put 37,000 Medicaid recipients on notice that they could lose benefits
Link: http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2018/05/people_who_are_elderly_disable.html
"We can't just afford to bury our heads in the sand," said Jay Dardenne, Gov. John Bel Edwards' chief budget officer and the state's commissioner of administration. "We tried to delay this as long as we possibly can."
Those receiving notification include around 20,000 people who live in nursing homes, thousands of people with intellectual disabilities who live in group homes and those who receive home health care assistance. All of their support services would be at risk, including the ability to stay in a nursing home, if state Medicaid funding is slashed.
The Louisiana House approved a state operating budget last month that would eliminate four Medicaid programs for the disabled and elderly. Notices are scheduled to go out to those affected Thursday (May 9), though their delivery has been pushed back previously. Dardenne said the 37,000 people will also be contacted to see if they qualify for some other kind of Medicaid service that isn't proposed for elimination.
And, Baton Rouge - The Advocate:
At 'difficult' hearing, public begs Louisiana lawmakers for health care help; nursing home patients warned

About 35,000 letters will be mailed Thursday to people who rely on Medicaid health care programs deemed "optional" under federal guidelines. The letters include 17,000 to nursing home residents across the state whose assistance would end July 1 if the Legislature doesn't cover funding for those programs in a budget that is currently being crafted.
"These people cannot be taken care of at home and many of them are at an age where there is no home to return to," said Mark Berger, executive director of the Louisiana Nursing Home Association, often a politically powerful group in the State Capitol.
Beyond patients with mental and physical limitations being threatened with the possibility of having to move out, Berger said the news also could trigger layoffs at nursing homes.
"This budget cut looms large over the entire program," he said.

(14,490 posts)Minorities will be the most likely to suffer. Will be interesting to see how this plays out because it may be a canary in the coal mine for what can hit other states just as hard and fast.
The positive side is that at least their general public is now aware of an impending public disaster, so they can't say they were not told. Now, it's up to the working populace of Louisiana to get off their ass and do something fast.

(3,626 posts)While the threat exists and shouldn't, the seniors aren't being evicted any time soon and there is hope that a legislative special session will be able to restore the funding to correct the problem.
The warning letters going out are an obvious tactic to kick the state legislators who won't vote for new revenue sources which are mathematically necessary to keep the state functioning. And it's working, because those legislators are visibly pissed about it. The problem is not that the state went for Trump, as that has nothing to do with this problem. The problem is that healthcare and higher education are the only places where deep cuts aren't constitutionally forbidden, and are therefore mathematically necessary in order to balance the budget.
In reality the state's problem is less about Trump than it is about Grover Norquist. The "no new taxes ever" idiots are going to have to vote for some new taxes, or bad things are going to happen. The letters are about reminding them of this. They could not correct the problem in the regular legislative session because new revenue can only be addressed in a special session, which is certain to be called once the regular session is over. The thing is, they've had several chances in the past to fix it and failed to do so. This time it's really going to be bad if they try kicking the can again.
KY_EnviroGuy
(14,490 posts)It did strike me odd what you said about their budget cut laws. One would think in a rational world, severe cuts to healthcare would be constitutionally forbidden. However, in today's bazaar political world, not much seems rational these days.
Regarding Norquist, I still believe signing on to his anti-tax pledge should have violated most any state or federal oath of office. If I'm right, it's apparent they just don't care.

(36,048 posts)Even as they don't "drain the swamp", but make it worse, they also "thin the herd." I suspect that those elderly being thinned out -- if they're not mostly black -- might have taught them those values.
Government of, by and for the few at the expense of the many is tyranny. Revolt cannot come from the wretched themselves; it will have to come from the middle class and the lawyers. Is there a middle class in Louisiana?
Can this eviction even be constitutional??
Doesn't this kind of citizen treatment also indicate a constitutional crisis?

(19,060 posts)What elderly Trump voters dont get is that in the eyes of Trump and his party it is they who are the lazy takers that are free loading off the system. The Republican view is that if you arent wealthy you failed at life and shouldnt get to retire with dignity and security. Their view is that these people did this to themselves and they deserve to be thrown into the street to die.
This view drives their efforts to end social security. When/if they do theyll blame those who werent able to save enough outside the social security system by saying, well you were told for a generation that SSI had problems, why didnt you save $2 Million outside of SSI? You deserve whatever fate awaits you in the street. This is their actual view.
And there is nothing in this view at odds with the modern evangelical movement, within which a Christianity has been perverted to the point where being rich is the only thing that matters in gods eyes. We have a front row seat to this here in West Michigan with Calvinism.
