At Least 28 Palestinians Die in Protests as U.S. Prepares to Open Jerusalem Embassy
The relocation of the embassy from Tel Aviv was timed for the 70th anniversary of the formation of Israel a move that many Israelis have celebrated but that has enraged Palestinians.

RIGHT NOWPalestinian officials say at least 28 people have died in the latest round of protests.
At least 1,000 Palestinian demonstrators were also wounded along the border fence with Gaza, the Health Ministry reported, as the mass protests that began on March 30 and that had already left dozens dead erupted again.
The relocation of the United States Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv was set for Monday, timed to the 70th anniversary of the formation of Israel a move that many Israelis have celebrated but that has enraged Palestinians.

I'm sympathetic to the plight of both the Israelis and the Palestinians. Why did Trump move the embassy to Jerusalem and poke the Palestinians ? This violence is of benefit to no one.

(11,865 posts)This is a sop to the Evangelical right. Of course the PENAC guys like this too.

It was to score some achievement he can brag about. He is no Christian.

...but Pence is.
I dont think this had anything to do with anything Trump thinks or believes. He was probably getting pressure from two major sources of pressure - the evangelical right and Sheldon Adelson.

(7,288 posts)christian and that he knows nothing about biblical prophesy but the Jews have been wanting a one state Jerusalem since 1948 and this happens to fit in perfectly with the evengelicals prophesy BS. So Adelson, Pense and his new Secretary of State are what pushed him in all likelihood.

(5,914 posts)He's never cracked a Bible and wouldn't have the first clue about anything that's in it.
But he's got John Bolton and others of the "very best people" to tell him how he can quickly become a beloved "War President" like Bush, etc. That's all he cares about.

(11,804 posts)Either Genocide or Deportation. They see this as a war between two sides, and the only way for Israel to win is for the Palestinians to lose; of course that begs the question of how much more do Palestinians have to lose, which isn't much frankly. So what looks to us like cruelly promoting violence will simply create conditions where Americans and Israelis will be allowed to exterminate the Palestinians.
Maybe I'm reaching but it seems that way to me.

(26,735 posts)Why does that have anything at all to do with it? Hamas' intent is for civilians to be killed. That's their strategy. They go out of their way to push the women and children forward and take shots from behind them.
There's been no shortage of Israelis killed by terrorist attacks. If Hamas takes shots at IDF soldiers and miss (or hit armor) and the IDF shoots back and hits... does that really become a relevant point because Hamas isn't particularly capable?

(11,263 posts)Your o k with that? You don't kill people just because they are angry at you. The world is watching and it's not good for your side. It was probably a stone that hit your tank. Even if it was a bullet it's not a reason to kill people? It was a fucking tank. Good talk I'm done with it. Peace be with you.

(26,735 posts)I just place the blame where it belongs: With the people who wanted those children to die. Hamas.

(53,410 posts)You can go to the State Department web site to see if there are any travel warnings. Jerusalem might be too volatile but other parts of Israel, like Tel Aviv are probably safe. And depending on where you live you can contact either the Israeli Embassy or a Consulate. I suggest you do contact them, and do some online research on it.
I would talk to any Israeli researchers you know and study up on the police and military activities in Israel. Unlike the US, Israel has their military patrolling civilian checkpoints and quite a few Palestinian towns, and they also have a dedicated anti terrorist police force.
Good luck!
The specimens we're looking at are in Jerusalem. There's no point to staying in Tel Aviv.
I've been to Jerusalem before, and felt perfectly safe. In fact, the most uncomfortable I felt was in ultraorthodox Jewish neighborhoods; my wife and I got some seriously dirty looks, even though my wife (who is Jewish) was dressed very modestly. (So was I, for what it's worth.) But this feels different, at least to me; Trump has prompted some very provocative action within Jerusalem itself.
I don't actually have to be in Jerusalem for my own research. I'm going mostly because I really don't want one of my students (esp. a woman) there alone right now.

(53,410 posts)If I recall correctly the kind of street violence like this subsides quickly due to the military although its mostly in Palestinian areas. Something like this in Jerusalem will probably get quashed very quickly. The city is too important to all sides. But thats just my opinion which could be really off the mark.

(53,410 posts)Its being reported that its on the Israeli/Gaza border. Its about the US Embassy being moved to Jerusalem, but not in Jerusalem.
I imagine its because Jerusalem is a holy city for the Jews, the Muslims and the Catholics.

(9,895 posts)That is 100% horseshit nonsense and it is beneath a sentient people to traffic openly in the fever-swamp nonsense of the Fox News / Christo-fascists here.
This is done, as are all things Trump, for craven, temporal gain and without regard for consequences or the harm it may do to others. The calculus here was simple....1) Trump is in a spiral of negative stories and revelations about his shady businesses, shady campaign and shady associates; 2) Trump sees maximum exposure for a distraction by marrying Israel/Jerusalem and Iran/Nuclear Deal as twin provocations to make a dangerous area more so; 3) Trump acts in Trump's interest and ignores EVERYTHING else.
The goddamn Bible and the freaks from Fox and the backwaters of Evangelical wet dreams had nothing to do with his "thinking" on this. Nothing at all...
