This isn't to say that I don't appreciate the series, I just don't believe that it has any effect on the RW. But then again. maybe the RW isn't the target audience.

(238 posts)This whole thing is because Dan Cathy says he is a christian right? I have a question, Jesus said it is easier for a camel to go through an eye of a needle than a rich man to go to heaven, how come he has not given up his riches and giving the food away at his restaurants? To prove he is a christian he needs to give up his earthly treasures and receive his reward when he dies like the rest of us are expected to do.

(95,337 posts)I'll be the first to admit I have never had the healthiest of diet but I was never a big fan of fast food. Maybe once a month I'd get a roast beef sandwich from Arby's and about the same for a Chocolate Shake from McDonald's. In a pinch I do like the salads from Wendy's. Give me a big pile of veggies and I'm a happy camper.
But what's weird is after 6 months of a healthier lifestyle I find my body really rejects foods that are unhealthy. Don't get me wrong, I can eat them and savor them. But in a few hours my body feels like shit. If it's alot of sugar I'll have a killer headache. Too much salt and I can feel my body bloat up.
So for me, I doubt I would ever partake in an event just like this because it promotes unhealthy foods, my body just can't handle it anymore.

(35,825 posts)I react similarly. My take, though, is that this type of food just makes people feel that way and they don't notice it because they eat it on a fairly regular basis. I don't think it has anything to do with getting older.
It's only when one stays off it for a long, long time and then has some that one notices how bad it makes a person feel.
I noticed it with other unhealthy products. Thirty-one years ago when I had quit smoking, I tried a cigarette and it made me feel horrible for days.
Soda--same thing.
I think our body acclimates to these lousy products and we don't notice how bad they make us feel until we've been away from them for awhile (awhile is at least a month).

(1,262 posts)Interracial Marriage: Many Deep South Republican Voters Believe Interracial Marriage Should Be Illegal
Despite the fact that the number of interracial marriages in the U.S. reached an all-time high this year, there are many who still believe that mixed-race marriage is unacceptable and should be made illegal, according to a new report.
On Monday, polling firm Public Policy Polling (PPP) revealed that 29 percent of likely GOP voters surveyed in Mississippi believe that interracial marriage should be illegal. Fifty-four percent said intermarriage should remain legal, and the rest responded that they weren't sure. The survey also found that 21 percent of likely GOP voters polled in Alabama believe that interracial marriage should be illegal.

I don't understand why they don't just shrug their shoulders and say "who cares what others do in their bedrooms". Comparing this hate with those who stood openly against integration 50 years ago is apt.
Sometimes I suspect these people are so insecure in their own sexual identity that they over react as a way to drive another nail in their closet door. They should just stay home and burn their hand on the stove everytime they have a homoerotic urge.

The comparison between the black civil rights movement and the gay civil rights movement has so many parallels that the comparison is impossible to ignore..
Edited for redundant redundancy..
zeemike
(18,998 posts)But there are many differences between them...and to this specific point the goals are not the same....the civil rights movement had an achievable goal of equal rights not the abolishment of racism...cause the latter is what that long arch of history is about...changing peoples minds and hearts not confrontation with them over their views.
And that was the meaning of "keep your eyes on the prize"...and their prize was equality not the destruction of an idea through confrontation and political pressure...they did not go after that impossible and foolish goal...and they won.
Some one has convinced someone that we should attack bigotry...call them out and subject them to political pressure...and what that has accomplished is to make a fight where there should be none and make us and them choose up sides...and many of the church goers saw this as an attack on religion and went for the sandwich.
Now they are firmly locked in on that side and you will play hell trying to win the hearts and minds that way.

(18,998 posts)But not so much that it effected my ability to tell right from wrong.

Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)There was plenty of confrontation in the civil rights era, MLK Jr was successful at least in part because Malcolm X and the Black Panthers were right behind him if he couldn't achieve the ends in a less confrontational way..
The gay haters aren't hating any more than they did last month or any less for that matter, what they are doing is showing those who are neither pro nor anti just how irrational they are. I have several of these people in my extended family and you're just going to have to wait for them to die off because they will never change, you will never win their hearts and minds because those their hearts and minds are already full of hate.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)I was alive and informed back then in the days of the civil rights...MLK rejected such things completely...he was aware like Gandhi was aware that to attack ideas and beliefs only works against you...
And it was this non violent and wise leadership that made it happen...and he did indeed win over hearts and minds of the population when his completely non violent protest was met with violence...and they did not fight back.
They never went after Lester Maddox...who also had a chicken place...they kept their eyes on the prize and the prize was the legal right to be served in public places...not to destroy bigotry.
What this looks like is that the gay community can't find any actual place where they are discriminated at to protest so they are going after the thought crime...I hope that is not the case but that is what it looks like.
It is a big mistake from the political view...it just rallies the right wing troops.

(45,851 posts)I know these people, I have them in my own extended family and I hate it because they are totally immune to logic, reason, compassion, and empathy for anyone they don't consider part of their tribe..

ETA: Essentially it is impossible to use reason to change someone's mind that never used reason to get to their position in the first place.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)And had nothing to do with MLK and the SCLC...MLK was totally opposed to violence and the Black Panthers only fouled up his movement...and was infiltrated by the FBI and had agent provocateurs in their midst. Malcolm X was assassinated because he was trying to do something about the corruption in the Nation of Islam.
The protesters were well trained to not resist or provoke anyone...and that is the reason they were so successful in winning over the country to their cause....After America saw the protesters being beaten and abused by the cops and were clearly not resisting and were completely non violent the public opinion turned against segregation...and it is a simple thing because most people have a sense of fairness...and what they saw on the TV as completely unfair.
I am so sorry to hear it is in your family...that must be tough. But I know that only love can change a heart and you must find some way to still love them without ever giving up your own rights to be yourself....easy to say I know but it is the only way.

(18,998 posts)Yes I remember it well...and it was a victory of sorts for the right wing....and started the decline of the country and elected Nixon...so what was gained?...law and order was the right wing meme as a response to it...and Nixon was the law and order man just waiting to exploit it...and exploit it he did...then went to work on the anti war movement using the agent provocateur to incite them to violence so he could crack down on them too.
Once you compromise your principles they win. But they could not get King to compromise his principles of non violence and so he had to die.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)So what you are saying is utter bull puckey. We are seeking specific rights, not trying to 'end bigotry'. One of the rights we seek is the right to marry, which happens to have been a right sought in that other civil rights movement as well. I like the way you claim King simply won those hearts and minds, as if he was not murdered for what he did, along with many others.
We seek the right to marry, and internationally we seek the right to simply exist in the face of hate mongers like Cathy and his Ugandan allies. This 'destroy bigotry' thing is your own creation out of whole cloth. That's your phrasing, your concept, your prejudice and your lack of information, not anything others are seeking.
The cavalier attitude you have toward discrimination idicates you face none in your own life to speak of.
One wonders if you are aware that in most Chick Fil A States, it is perfectly legal to discriminate against gay people in employment. Are you aware of that fact?
zeemike
(18,998 posts)He did not go after and speak out the owner of the business cause he knew that was futile and would only make a hero out of him.
No they stuck to the goal of equal TREATMENT...and did not get into attacking the ideas these people had.
You did not hear MLK or the civil rights movement speak out against George Wallace ideas or Lester Maddox or even Bull Conner...they knew that was a losing strategy and rejected it...they did speak out about what they DID.
And FYI I have seen the most horrible examples of bigotry...I was in Mississippi in 1965...and there is quite a difference between being denied the right to marry and being denied the right to walk down the same street as a withe man without getting off the sidewalk when he passed...not allowed to vote not allowed to walk down the road without being hit by a club from a pickup truk and it could even be the sheriff that did it...And all of this sanctioned by the local government.
If gay people are attacked it is a crime...then it was no crime to attack a black man.
And black people are still discriminated in employment...and that discrimination cannot be addressed by the law as long as they say that it is not their race that caused them not to hire...the same is true with gay people and in fact there may be discrimination against white people by black people...or religion over atheism or any thing you can name...but you cannot use the law to ferret this out and stop it..it takes a change of heart and no one will change the heart when the perceive that they are in a fight against the enemy.
Equal rights under the law is the only attainable goal...if you chase anything else it is a loser.
MNBrewer
(8,462 posts)calling racists racists. Is that what you're saying? MLK opposed the lunch counter sit ins, the Montgomery bus boycott, etc.?
zeemike
(18,998 posts)And not for the purpose of attacking the owners for what they thought but to get the rights people were entitled to.
They did not do sit ins because of George Wallace's racial beliefs but to get served in public places...the objective was the boycott was to ride the buses and be able to use the waiting room and the bathroom and be served at the lunch counter.
What right are the LGBT community demanding form the chicken place?.... and what could the owner do to make things right?...do you want him to renounce his religious beliefs?.....stop donating money to groups not approved of by LGBT? ....is that the goal?
Should MLK have had a boycott to make Lester Maddox renounce his segregation ideas?...George Wallace and Bull Conner?
Well history would be much different if he had...that much is sure.
When you start to attack people for what they think and say and the only remedy for it is them to renounce it it looks really bad to most people....and I damn sure don't want people to try to force me to STFU...and if they do there will be blow back cause no one likes being intimidated or harassed for what they think....this is not the old Soviet Union.
MNBrewer
(8,462 posts)IF Mr. Cathy wants to donate to anti-gay organizations and say "guilty as charged", I will boycot his business. Period. I hope he goes bankrupt because of his bigotry, however, he will always have a core business in the Confederacy.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)I don't care what you say...I care what you do...same with him.
And when the LGBT community makes a big stink over what he said and then gets officials and politicians to act against him....and that may be all perceptual...that don't matter...that is wrong and sets back everyone on the progressive side and gives solidarity to the right wingers...and it is all for nothing cause it gets you no further on your goal of acceptance...and in fact sets it back. You are fighting for something that has no remedy short of submission of his right to think freely.
Your words do nothing but your actions can do plenty.
MNBrewer
(8,462 posts)But that has not happened. Nothing beyond free speech, which is allowable on "our side" as well as his, right? Nothing has been done IN REALITY to ChikFilA beyond sternly worded letters and sound bites. List one thing, one single, tiny thing that has happened to harm CFA done by a public official in an official government capacity because Mr. Cathy is a raging homophobe.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)This is the court of public opinion...and when you have government officials threatening someone because of their speech it is enough evidence for the public....and rightly so.
You would not require much proof if a government official spoke out against gays now would you?...Would you say that it is OK because he actually did not do anything? no he is in a position of authority that is supposed to treat us all the same....his free speech is limited by that.
The mistake that is made in having two sets of values...and people see through it...once you drop principles for one you drop it for all...so if the chicken man can not say what he wants to say neither can you and neither can I....we are judged by actions not words..and that is how it should be.
Now show me one thing the chicken man did to discriminate and you got a case.
MNBrewer

(18,998 posts)But it was about rights not about the sin of bigotry...not about the thought but the acts...you cannot control what people think and if you try it will backfire on you...just as it did with the chicken sandwich.
People should be free to think what they will and others should be free to tell them they are wrong...but when you try to punish them with the government it don't work for you it works against you...it is the actions the law is built on not the thought.
Luminous Animal
(27,310 posts)Most of this United States do not offer civil rights protections for the LGBTQ community. Chick-Fil-A, and every business that supports such bigotry do not deserve to exist in the 21st century. They are, indeed, equal to those who opposed civil rights for African Americans for most of our U.S. history.
Currently, because of encoded civil rights protections afforded to race, religion, gender, etc., governments CAN have a remedy against bigotry. King's occupation of Washington DC was a show of force to pass the Civil Rights Act - an action which gave government the tools to punish violators.
I agree that government cannot punish a business for the personal views of their CEOs, employees, affiliates, etc. But I also believe that a government can take action against a business that promotes and financially supports hatred towards a protected class. That is, I believe that the government can (and should) deny a commercial business license to the Aryan Nation and the KKK.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)What you are asking for is to turn this country into a authoritarian society that has someone that tells us all what we can and what we cannot think and makes a crime out of it.
Sorry but we have seen this movie before and we know how it turns out...and it is almost as if you have chosen a position the majority of people will reject...that is the punishing of people for thought crimes or giving to a cause deemed homophobic by someone we don't even know....it is a loser but no one will admit to it and if they do they will be called a homophobes because they don't go along with the program and accept the principle of thought crimes.
This will not turn out well.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)Criticism is not punishment..
The right wingers have boycotted everyone from Ford to Disney over gay rights, now they scream because the left is doing exactly what they have been doing for at least a decade.
zeemike
(18,998 posts)And why do you think all those people went out for a chicken sandwich if not for the perception that someone is being attacked for their views?
And it is not at all the exact same thing...if they wold have just boycotted the chicken sandwich there would be no media attention but they were not satisfied with just that and some politicians and you advocated denying the right to make a living to them because you think their thoughts and beliefs merited it.
and it plays right into the right wing narrative that they have been feeding the sheeple with for decades...that liberals are socialist and authoritarian and want to take away your freedom...it is like they wrote the play you are preforming.
It is the wrong fight at the wrong time...and it is frustrating for those of us that can see it...cause if we speak we are labeled the enemy...(that great trap of) you are ether with us or against us...and yet feel the need to tell it like you see it...a duty really, that is not appreciated.
And I see they are gong double down and will continue to draw attention to the chicken sandwich and make the owner more rich and more a victim of the "godless left" that must be defeated at the polls in november....the timing is perfect....and they can get the atheist involved and have a threesome cluster fuck to drive as many as possible away because they see it as a direct attack on religion...again confirming the narrative..

(45,319 posts)by the government is the GLBT community. Cathy has all rights, and no one has prevented him from doing anything. Certainly not the same government that denies us the right to fair treatment under the tax code. Certainly not the States that for the most part allow legal, open discrimination agaisnt GLBT people in employment and in housing. Certainly not the Federal government which refuses to pass a national law making such discrimination illegal.
And this whole thing was started by them. Your theory boils down to this: if we do the right things, they will behave like fuzzy warm puppies, so we have to let them do ALL the talking, uncountered. The theory is usually stated more simply: Sit down and shut up, you pony wanting gay people, it's just one little song, prayer, sandwich, it's just your only life, without liberty, denied the right to pursue happiness.
In your posts, I see a person who has sat aside as millions are mistreated by the government for years, your entire lifetime, and then when some rich bigot gets criticism for his actions and libels, and the governement has done NOTHING to him or his company, you are frothing about rhetoric and some potential harm to Dan Cathy. Just the idea that he might possibly face an injustice seems to be far more important to you than the many actual, past present and ongoin future discriminations the government imposes on your GLBT neighbors daily.
Hard to find a way to see your memes as anythig but pointless and grounded in fear and weakness. That's not how we do things. You might want to just look away.

It seems that you don't get that and that I cannot make you see that it is a real thing.
And you cannot reason with people acting out of anger or fear...and that your anger is causing their fear and no one will be able to reason with them ether.
Anger and fear is the whip they use against us...and it works.

I can never be what I ought to be until you are allowed to be what you ought to be. Therefore, I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.s dream to make room at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people.
Gays and lesbians stood up for civil rights in Montgomery, Selma, in Albany, Ga. and St. Augustine, Fla., and many other campaigns of the Civil Rights Movement. Many of these courageous men and women were fighting for my freedom at a time when they could find few voices for their own, and I salute their contributions.

If you want tolerance then you must show tolerance or be a hypocrite...and that include tolerance for unpopular opinions...and this chicken sandwich thing is not about equal rights and the right to marry...the chicken sandwich has nothing to do with that...and neither does the bigoted opinion of it's owner or how he spends his money.

(33,958 posts)Nobody ever tried to deny CFA their right to free speech. Free speech is guaranteed to all,
however, freedom of speech is symbiotic with freedom of expression--and if your free speech condemns someone else s freedom of expression...then you just have to understand that while yes, you have the right to say what you want--the freedom does not extend to the consequences (intended or unintended) of those words. Everyone in the world that wants a chicken sandwich on a Sunday knows that CFA is a religious company. That is fine with just about everyone, even the folks that are gay or support the rights of others to be gay. However, when the proceeds of that chicken sandwich go to actively fight "the homosexual agenda" through anti-gay organizations...that changes the dynamic and it becomes a quest to deny someone else's rights to THEM....instead of one to preserve your own rights. THAT is what this is about--not denying CFA their right to say what they feel.

(18,998 posts)And then you say you support freedom of speech and then say however and then go on to say that it should be limited?
Show me where his speech kept you from expressing yourself...
The right manipulates the left through emotions...and this is a case of it...and they will continue to exploit this as long as they can keep tweaking those emotions and making you react to them.
I know I will never convince you because you are reacting out of emotions not considered responses...you seem to want your pound of flesh and nothing in logic or reason will stop you.
But carry on..there are still some right wingers that have not been energized by this...double down...and perhaps you can get the atheist to join you and attack religion openly...that should convince the rest that the left wants a soviet style system like the right wing meme says...that will help and I am sure it is in the works to happen before November.

(6,801 posts)not the opposition, that's to be expected and you can always find opposition to any issue.
But rather that our great ideological battle of the moment is over which fast food restaurant to get fat and die at.
Next up: the death penalty. Supporters go to Taco-Bell. Opponents to McDonalds.
