CT General Assembly District 17
While Hillary Clinton won the state in 2016, the state legislature in Connecticut has been trending purple from Democrats having veto proof majorities in both houses in 2008, the state now has a tie in the state senate and the state general assembly is too close for comfort and has several DINO types among the Democrats.
This district covers most of the upper middle class suburbs of Avon and Canton, CT. In 2012, the 17th district went for Mitt Romney over Barack Obama by 7 points, but went for Hillary Clinton over Spanky by more than 12 points in 2016. So, it is heading in the right direction. However, Democrats did not field a candidate in CT-17 in 2016 against Republican Tim LeGeyt even though this formally red district is now pink and trending purple. LeGeyt is also now retiring after 10 years in the state general assembly, so this is the best chance for Democrats in a long time.
This week, Democrats nominated the energetic Eleni Kavros McGraw from Avon to challenge the eventual Republican nominee in this district. Eleni has long been involved in community issues and founded two local non-profits, 100 Women Who Can and ForwardCT. Last year, as town Democratic campaign manager she helped increased local Democratic fundraising by 43% for local elections where Democrats had one of their best showings in the past 50 years and fielded the most candidates they've had in decades.
While it is an uphill battle, with the district trending purple, it is winnable.
Help out if you can.
