Sure, Jan: Aaron Schlossberg's Apology, Blacksplained

On Tuesday, after a solid week of being the cowardly laughingstock of the entire world, Schlossberg decided he’d had enough and issued an apology via Twitter. In the statement, he claims the video does not convey his true self or feelings, and that he is not a racist.

You don’t have to waste your time reading it. I’ve taken the liberty of doing so, and I will now blacksplain it for you so you can understand what Schlossberg’s words truly mean.

snip

“Seeing myself online opened my eyes,” he continued. What he really means is Holy shit! Who knew getting caught on video being a racist, xenophobic, entitled piece of shit bigot could have such swift and unrelenting repercussions? Everyone knows my name and knows how I feel now. There’s no hiding from it. It’s everywhere.

“[T]he manner in which I expressed myself is unacceptable and is not the person I am,” he said. While wholly unacceptable, it’s definitely who he is. People don’t have bigot’s Tourette’s. You don’t randomly go on a racist outburst like that if it’s not already in you.

snip

He’s sorry that video is making it impossible for him to be an undercover racist.
This apology, much like Aaron Schlossberg himself, is full of shit.

And as for that "not the person I am," hasn't Schlossberg been photographed and videotaped at other events going full bigot? Which is to say, this isn't his first rodeo.

Coprolalia is the medical term used to describe one of the most puzzling and socially stigmatizing symptoms of Tourette Syndrome—the involuntary outburst of obscene words or socially inappropriate and derogatory remarks.

http://www.tourette.org/resource/understanding-coprolalia/

In Tourette syndrome, compulsive swearing can be uncontrollable and undesired by the person uttering the phrases. Involuntary outbursts, such as racial or ethnic slurs in the company of those most offended by such remarks, can be particularly embarrassing. The phrases uttered by a person with coprolalia do not necessarily reflect the thoughts or opinions of the person.[5]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coprolalia

The term coprolalia is used to describe involuntary vocalizations that are obscene or socially inappropriate. Coprolalia includes swearing, but also includes saying things that are culturally taboo, socially unacceptable or inappropriate because of age or context.

For example, a child using any kind of obscene language, or anyone saying negative comments about another’s ethnicity or physical appearance.

I don't, for a minute, think that is what was going on here - but since it is a real and very distressing phenomenon for those who sufffer from it, probably best not to suggest it isn't real.

Schlossberg said clearly racist and bigoted things, but it feels like she automatically assumes he can't change.

Maybe he can't, but that's a very cynical view. Obviously one that will get lots of likes and page views, because who doesn't like a good pile on, but one that doesn't leave room for redemption.

And as for that he might not have realized how far he had gone, have you heard the one about how you boil a frog? It is possible that he has developed his hatred over a longer period where each step built on the previous and he wasn't actually consciously aware.

Yes he needed to apologize, and no by itself that isn't enough, but unlike the author of the piece, I believe there is a chance he can change.

"If it's once, maybe you can pawn it off as someone having a bad day, but this is not," Morris said. "This is like an ongoing thing for this person. To be caught on video twice? How many times has he not been caught on video?"

12. Challenging stereotypes about Tourette syndrome

A group of people seeking to change the way their disability is viewed and reported is those who have Tourette syndrome. An aspect of the coverage of what is an inherited neurological disorder is the association of the condition with swearing.

An online review, published last December, of a comedy show by the duo Cassetteboy described their mashup of The Apprentice as showing Alan Sugar “barking ‘bloody!’ like a Tourette’s sufferer”. Matthew Pountney, co-founder of the website Touretteshero, which aims to celebrate and share the creativity and humour of the disorder in an accessible way, complained in an email that the line “like a Tourette’s sufferer” should have no place in the Guardian.

He wrote: “This is something, as Touretteshero, we do our very best to avoid as it reinforces a lot of the stereotypes about Tourette’s that we work hard to avoid. In anything relating to what we do, we ask that ‘sufferer’ be replaced by ‘person with Tourette’s’. This would be preferable in this instance, but it still doesn’t get away from associating Tourette’s with swearing (to make a joke).”

Only 10% of the 300,000 or so people who have Tourette syndrome in the UK have coprolalia, the technical term for swearing tics, according to the charity Tourettes Action. Jessica Thom, the other Touretteshero co-founder, has previously written in the Guardian in 2012 about Tourette syndrome being used as a “cheap joke” when it was used by David Cameron in an interview. He said that sitting opposite Ed Balls, the then shadow chancellor, during prime minister’s questions is “like having someone with Tourette’s sitting opposite you”.

Thom wrote: “For lots of people, Cameron’s casual use of a disability to insult another politician will be shocking. For many other people it won’t, either because they think Tourette’s is a fair target for jokes because of the common misconception that everyone with Tourette’s swears; or perhaps it’s because they’re familiar with the government’s abhorrent attitude to disabled people.”

he is sorry he got caught on tape. That said, we shouldn't try to make arguments to elevate ourselves by denigrating other minorities. His treatment of those who suffer from Tourette's is very problematic.
