(82,849 posts)After that report came out of post-mortems on the brains of former players, all but one of them showed signs of CTE. I've been a fan of football for nearly 50 years, but when that report came out I had to do some thinking. For years, I'd overlooked the former players who spent their last days in terrible pain. The players who cut their lives short using performance enhancing drugs. The players who had been crippled or maimed for life.
Then that report came out. And I finally said to myself, "I'm watching young men grind up their brains for my entertainment." Well, no more. I just can't watch anymore. It doesn't matter if they're being paid millions of dollars or playing for free. To my mind, it's blood sport, and I won't be a part of it. Did I miss it? Yeah, particularly at first. But as last season went on I missed it less and less. In spite of pro football's ubiquity, I've been able to avoid it or tune it out, and I don't miss it so much anymore.

(53,410 posts)That was over 25 years ago. How could the physical harm done not be obvious to everyone? Im thankful he never got hurt. At least not in an obvious way.
The day will come when we collectively see it as being a savage game, just like we see the gladiator games of the Roman Empire.
