(6,555 posts)Some of us have fathers that fought in WWII and grandfathers who fought in WWI. Those of us who have friends and relatives who fought in Vietnam, Iraq, Afganistan, and are serving as peace keepers in many corners of the world today. All fought not just for the freedom of the US of A, but to allow freedom to grow around the world. And I know that my Dad and Grandpa would be rolling in their graves over what is going on right now. Today is a day to honor those who lost their lives to help preserve that freedom. We need to be aware of the greater picture and an expanded idea of freedom. Freedom is worth protecting at all cost, and those who do not recognize that our freedom is in jeopardy are acting like ostriches.

(1,402 posts)How did it happen? Unbelievable and no one on the right will even try to stop this man. There used to be a lot of really decent people in the 'other party'. What happened to them? Why will they put up with such nonsense and still call themselves Christians!!

(194 posts)However, my super-patriotic father was also an enthusiastic supporter of Sen. Joseph McCarthy and his diabolical ilk in the House Un-American Activities Committee, Trumpesque demagogues all. They destroyed the lives of tens of thousands of innocent Americans, and even our most brilliant playwright of the postwar era, Arthur Miller, was only saved from being silenced after Marilyn Monroe went to Washington and buttered up these malevolent politicians, taking smiling photos with them.
My father, a leader in our state's American Legion, adamantly supported the racial segregation of our entire military throughout WW2 as well our major sports leagues. He was also virulently homophobic, hated "Wetbacks", and asians of any nationality. In particular, he was incensed that the Japanese-American families who FDR had thrown into internment camps had been released and, even worse in his eyes, eventually compensated for their stolen property.
The preponderance of Republican and racist Southern Democrats in Congress in the aftermath of WW II provides an abundance of historical evidence that my father attitudes were not out of the mainstream. When, the summer after high school graduation, I complained of the idiocy that the California Institute of Technology required me to sign the national loyalty oath (never been a member of subversive organization, etc.) simply for a summer job as an agronomy dept. aide, he berated me more harshly than for any other misdeeds in my young life. Readers of 'Catch-22' will recall Heller's satirical bullseye with the administrative officers' Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade, a fierce competition consisting of signing more loyalty oaths than others in order to show off the "greatest" patriotic devotion.
Obviously, my point here is that my father would disapprove your using a photo of him or one of his brothers-in-arms who, likely as not, would be Trump supporters along with my dad. I reckon it's not a sound strategy to combat Trump's malicious propaganda lies with dubious statements like this one being attributed to WWII soldiers who are not alive to state whether they concur with the claim that Trump speaks like Hitler.
I apologize in advance for both disagreeing and being disagreeable. All the same, as a lifelong progressive this is one of those rare times that I must beg to differ with some folks in this forum, for whom I hold the deepest respect and warmest regards.

(459 posts)One of the major supports for the "progressive liberalism" we lost under FDR was southern racism. Even unions in the 1950s - which are so lauded on the DU - were unabashedly racist, and except for the Wobblies, not open to blacks or women. Indeed, it was the gradual reform of unions in the 1960s to help all workers, that drove the wedge that Reagan exploited to get the votes of the so-called "Reagan Democrats". They chose racism over their own economic self-interest.
Now these people are suffering and committing suicide while liberal states which fed egalitarianism and pluralism are suffering from overgrowth due to too much money. Naturally, they blame everyone but themselves.

(2,065 posts)And Twitler is homegrown, and one of us, say the Trumpies. And to them, that makes all the difference, I suppose. I wonder if they are even aware of his German ancestry, so superficial is their knowledge and understanding. But whatever Trump's ancestry may be, that's not the point. We have had many fine public servants of German descent. He's a pathological liar, and a dangerous demagogue, just like his predecessor and role model from WWII. Perhaps the brainwashed evangelicals who form such an important part of Trump's power base would understand things better if I put it this way: Sometimes ravenous wolves do indeed come in sheep's clothing!
An excellent post, by the way - the poster, by not being explicit, really makes one think... One must accept that history has a great sense of irony when it tests us.
