The family of a student killed in this month's shooting at a Santa Fe, Texas, high school are suing the parents of the suspected shooter, according to the Associated Press.
The family alleges that the suspect's father, who reportedly owned the guns used in the attack, did not properly secure his weapons.
AP reported Friday that Christopher Stone and Rosie Yanas, whose 17-year-old son, Chris, was killed in the attack, are suing the parents of fellow student, Dimitrios Pagourtzis ...

(15,062 posts)Every gun owner should have the fear of God put into them when it comes to liability. If you aren't willing to be hyper-responsible then don't own a highly-portable long-distance death-machine.

(2,771 posts)for gun insurance or something. The only thing that is going to deter these people is some sort of negative cost for indulging in wanton gunlust. These kids doing the killing never seem to exist in a complete vacuum where the parents are 100% in the dark.

(2,201 posts)But, it won't really make any difference when it comes to school shootings.
The reason is, pretty much all parents (whether they own guns or not) don't think their kid is a potential school shooter. So, the possibility of being sued doesn't bother them, because they think there is a 0% chance of their kid ever doing something like that.
I think a strong majority of gun owners would agree that troubled, potentially violent, teenagers should have ZERO access to guns. They would even say that if somehow, 'their' kid was like that, they would take the proper steps to keep guns away from him.
Unfortunately, most parents don't even realize that their kid was a potential school shooter, until the kid actually shoots up a school.
