What are your thoughts on methadone treatment for opiod addiction. I ask for my son
HopeAgain
(4,407 posts)for years and, to be honest, have not seen good long term results. They are still addicted, just to a different substance. Eventually I see them use an illicit drug again. My son is a heroin addict and has almost a year clean after spending 90 days in a Mission similar to Salvation Army.
Replacement therapy such as methadone and Subutex are best if only used short-term for a transition, IMHO.
Not what I wanted to hear sadly
I guess there is no miracle drug to help them. So sorry to hear it hit your son too

(6,324 posts)My experience is that the only real solution is a strong in-patient treatment program followed by a good post-treatment support system like NA.
The replacements mean the person is still addicted. They are good for getting away from the worse stuff while waiting for the in-patient program. But what I see if that people who just get on those programs and dont do anything else will eventually slip back to other drugs. Because they are still addicted, and still will need to feed that addiction. That day he cant make it to the clinic on time or is having a rough day and wants more the backsliding starts.
I will say that one of the HUGE aspects I have seen in recovery is getting the person away from the city/town/area they were in. They need to get away from the people who they ran with while in that lifestyle and away from their known sources of drugs. Because those people will drag them back into the lifestyle and being close to them makes it easier to find the stuff if he backslides. If you can help him restart in a new city or town after treatment and get him into NA right away in that new city then he wont have the bad crowd near and the only people he will know right away will be the NA sponsor and the people he introduces him to. That will be a HUGE positive in his ability to sustain his recovery.
