Donald Trumps war against our oldest friends! or Putin is in heaven!Fareed Zakaria interviewed Bannon in Rome recently where he was enthusiastically cheering on the chaos of the recent Italian elections, implying that a new day of economic populism was surging across Europe like a Panzer division on methamphetamines. He was full of the usual contradictions and muddled philosophical compost, but he essentially made the case that right-wing nationalism is the wave of the future, while trying unconvincingly to claim that race, ethnicity and religion have nothing whatsoever to do with it. He sputtered his way through an unconvincing explanation about how Trumps massive tax cuts were the basis of Trumps economic populism:

In Europe there is certainly a rising right-wing movement that Bannon and his allies are closely observing, presumably for tips on how to use Trump to make it happen in America. For instance, Trumps newly confirmed ambassador to Germany, a former right-wing hit man and odious Twitter troll named Richard Grenell, has made one of the worst first impressions of any diplomat in history with this tweet:
There was widespread indignation from across the German political spectrum but Grenell refused to back down, basically telling the German people he was only following orders:

Over the weekend Grenell went even further, giving an interview to Breitbart News in which he said he was excited by the rise of far-right parties in Europe and was prepared to empower other conservatives throughout Europe, other leaders.

Grenell's comments have earned him (and us) everything from rolling of eyes to calls for his expulsion.

(54,436 posts)They are almost bewildered if one shows up that isn't full of it. That's why Obama amazed and delighted them. It's also why they thought we had lost our collective minds with Trump--not that he won a manipulated election, but that we "allowed" it to happen. What they never understood is that we have no mechanism in place to do anything about it. But it would have been a hell of a stretch for the Founding Fathers to have foreseen the Internet Research Agency.

He has been thrashed in most of the European press and TV news media as well. This did not slip by ANYBODY. Of course, after the last incident with Justin Trudeau, there are few countries left that harbor any hope that Trump cares a rat's ass about anyone or anything. It takes some creative hate for a sitting U.S. president to publicly slam a popular Prime Minister of Canada.
