(15,303 posts)It's either the carrot (hidden funds deposited in untraceable accounts), or the stick (threats to divulge these payments and/or other salacious information.)
So with so much conniving going on with the pluto/aristo-crats around the world, how are they able to coordinate their shit without being detected? Used to be the haze of cigar smokes in back rooms with some big dudes ready to control access. Between all the security/snooping services private and state, you'd think there'd be some good recordings.

(8,200 posts)The fact is the majority of the Republicans despised FDR and fought against every piece of progressive legislation that the Democrats passed for the working class. They didn't dare buck Eisenhower who was regarded as a genuine hero by the entire nation. Just in passing when I was a kid we had a place near Frazer. This is where he came on occasion to a large ranch owed by one of his friends. They would stock the lake and stream feeding the Tabernash for Eisenhower's fishing enjoyment. He instructed them to make sure that the kids around the area were given access to the property after he left to catch the trout. When he arrived or left all the residents, Dems and Repubs would be sure to be on the road to wave him hello. Yeah, times have changed. Some for the better and some not so much.

(4,889 posts)or Teddy Roosevelt, his problem was that he was a war monger & most people forget Lincoln left for his 2nd term.

(11,738 posts)The Republicans (at least their supporters) were out trying to continue to do business with Germany during WW2 (Remember Prescott Bush and his buddies?) Republicans have backed numerous horrific right wing dictators including Pinochet in Chile, the Contras in Nicaragua, the Shah in Iran. Nixon went behind LBJ's back to sabotage peace talks with Vietnam to win the election of 68 and Reagan did the same thing to Jimmy Carter with Iran to win the election of 1980, which lead to the whole Iran/Contra scandal.
Republicans have never had a spine. They were just less up front about it.

(15,303 posts)The repuglicon MO. Say whatever gets you into power and then abuse it.
I also go back a few years and know that every administration (D/R) has taken some very horrific stances on issues internal and around the world. I can't give any party a clean bill-of-health. But the r's have always been the shadiest, the most "nixonian". We'll have to dig way deeper for the new mutant of dump-spawn.

(11,738 posts)Roosevelt interred Japanese-Americans in camps during WW2, Woodrow Wilson was a horrific racist who locked African Americans out of many facets of society and government work, Kennedy got us involved in Vietnam and Johnson escalated it, actually lying us into the conflict.
Like you said however, Republicans have taken things to a level that Democratic leaders would never dare to go and the difference is because of their governing philosophy. Republicans think that government serves only to facilitate the conduct of business and economic activity, to protect private property, and to wage war. Democrats think that government should be involved in promoting the general welfare and protecting the most vulnerable citizens, while working to ensure economic prosperity and opportunity.

(1,402 posts)Eugene Robinson is one of my most trusted news reporters. DJT and his cronies and the NRA have made our beloved country into a rogue country like North Korea and China. I honestly believe DJT and his supporters are trying to destroy our great USA and everything it stands for!!

(259 posts)The "once great political party" thinking is part of our cultural conditioning and serves only THEIR (the Republican) agenda. Historically, the Republican Party has served privileged interests, and privileged interests ALONE. They're by no means a "once great political party". They've ALWAYS been the instrument used by the Neo-Royalists to screw the common person into the ground!

(10,237 posts)...the Republican party also produced Lincoln, T Roosevelt and Eisenhower, who were all great men, and Lincoln & TR great presidents and Ike at least a good one. They also produced senators like Margaret Chase Smith and John Heinz.
BUT, supporting what you say, The old saying is that even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while.

(6,229 posts)are afraid of the voters. Look what happened to Rep Sandford on Tuesday. He lost his primary to a trumper because he dared to criticize trump. Then Rona calls out repubs and tells them to be loyal. This is very scary. If folks don't know how important the Midterms are, I don't know how they missed it.

(1,606 posts)He is nothing more or less than the "man behind the curtain," but fully and overly-exposed (by intention).
He is a tool, a poser, a distraction to the nth degree, and serves a purpose only to confuse, confound, and demoralize liberals.
Meanwhile, the right wing as formally instituted by Republicans in Congress and exerts its ill will on the institutions, laws, and traditions of the nation, savagely undermining the principles and accomplishments of the Democratic party.
I'm waiting for our party's leaders to loudly and forcefully --and in no uncertain terms--sound the alarm. Aside from random and occasional proclamations that lack substance and spirit, it's radio silence. Our leadership really needs to amp it up, seize attention, and control the news cycle!

(3,985 posts)I grew up with the old money, New England Ivy League Republicans.
They neglect their childrens emotional needs, hide behind Brooks Brothers and Talbots facades of decency, drink like fish, and live self-involved, alcohol-soaked, country/yacht club lives.
Sure, some charity work here and there.
Their emotionally deprived kids grow up to be Donald and Bolton and Bush Jr.
Empathy? meh
So, no, never great.
Mendacious, deluded, insular albeit well-educated, emotionally deprived adults.
Understanding the damaged hearts helps explain the ability to be so cruel and hard-hearted.
I have compassion for them. Quite a few hung out at my loving, middle class home. I grew up with them. Some managed to find their heart strings, but few of the old money kids did.
