U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris introduced a bill Tuesday aimed at waiving fees for replacing immigration documents destroyed in natural disasters, such as the fires that ripped through Northern California last October.
The bill, the Disaster Victims Passport and ID Relief Act, would apply to those who qualify for Federal Emergency Management Agency aid and would get rid of fees for replacing passport books (more than $100), green cards ($455), and employment authorization documents ($410), among other papers.
The bill would also make it easier for child care facilities to receive FEMA assistance following disasters.
Victims of natural disasters are forced to reconstruct their lives, and too often face high levels of financial stress, said Harris in a statement. We must do what we can to ease that burden including waiving fees associated with the replacement of critical documents.
