MSNBC to start its own streaming service

This may have been posted before, but I didn't see it.

It's being reported that MSNBC is planning on launching a standalone streaming service this year.

Recently Fox News announced plans to launch a standalone streaming service for cord cutters. Now it looks like MSNBC will follow Fox News’s lead by launching their own cord cutting service.

According to a report from Variety, MSNBC is hiring staff to help create the new streaming service. This new service will be made up of original programs created specifically for the new streaming service. While some hosts from MSNBC News will be on the network, don’t look for live streams of your favorite MSNBC programs.

I was excited about this until I read that it won't have my favorite MSNBC programs. Here's what the article says about that:

So why is Fox News and MSNBC just not offering a live feed of their current cable networks? Sources say that both Fox and NBC don’t want to upset cable networks who are paying big dollars to carry the news networks. It looks like Fox and NBC both see original content as a way to reach cord cutters without endangering their lucrative deals with cable companies. So if you still want access to MSNBC’s cable feed you will still need a service like Sling TV.

Still, this could be interesting. I'll be watching for it, since I'm a cordcutter.

It includes several news channels including CNN and MSNBC, but not fox.

There is PlutoTV, a free channel on Roku. It has an NBCnews/MSNBC combo channel. It runs MSNBC programs after they've aired on tv. The full programs.

There are podcasts.

There are now "live" streaming services...SlingTV for $30 or $35/mo. has 40 channels, including an add-on "news" package that includes MSNBC. The standard lineup also includes CNN.

Then there are other ways best not discussed.

Cordcutting works best, though, when a person can get some broadcast OTA antenna channels. I get all the major networks plus a couple more free OTA.

So I get to watch MSNBC.

The new streaming service is going to be a video service...live streaming on tv. And different from the regular MSNBC with its own programming. Fox is going to do the same thing.

CNN has had it for years. I never understood what MSNBC was waiting for.

10. No, CNN doesn't have what MSNBC is talking about.

CNN provides a service to its cable subscribers, where you can also stream it. But if you don't subscribe to cable or satellite, you can't get it.

CNN is included in some "live" streaming services, though, like MSNBC and a lot of other networks are. Those services are like cable-lite.

MSNBC is planning on launching its own standalone service, with special programming just for that service. You won't have to be a cable subscriber to access it. You subscribe to the MSNBC streaming service directly.

Fox announced this year that it will be doing this. Disney announced last year that it's going to do it. HBO has its own streaming service, too, called HBOgo, which is different from its service called HBONow, which is a service for its cable subscribers.

Is that what they audio stream on their site? Entire programs? I didn't know that. I know they have a lot of video clips of different shows.

5. MSNBC has podcasts...

Audio only, there is a delay, but no commercials... This is how I keep current with MSNBC since last year.

One note... Listening to Rachel Maddow (who is awesome) is hypnotic and puts me to sleep every night... You notice her repetition when listening only.

It's awesome.

But I'm able to see MSNBC right now, so no need for podcasts.

They have an internet app for listening on your smart phone.
