even the toddlers?
A doctor wrote about this in the WA Post today, but didn't explain why this rule exists. Neither did another shelter worker who left his job because he felt it was impossible to do.
No hugging, no holding, but they can hand an 18 month old books and toys.
And they wonder why they're still screaming?

(108,978 posts)But these no-touching rules apply to everyone. It isn't because the caregivers are unqualified.

(2,857 posts)I understand an attempt to put distance between caregivers and children in a daycare type situation to protect kids in case a pedophile fell through the cracks, but that is not what this is. These kids need nurturing caregivers.

(1,474 posts)while going to college. Moderately retarded men's ward. They loved playful and affectionate touching. One that I liked a great deal loved pretending to march. I would sing patriotic songs put my arm around his shoulder and he would giggle while we marched. His nickname was Candy Man because we would buy him candy bars which he loved. In the last year I worked there, rules were changed to forbid any physical contact or giving them food or beverage. The rationale was to prevent abuse. I worked there 3 years and never saw any abuse. There were many staff workers and professionals around all the time. The rule was bureaucracy trying to look good. It was absurd and took much away from the patients.

(1,967 posts)but I think it needs to be repeated to emphasize how cruel this policy is.
History Lesson: More than 100 years ago orphanages thought that by not allowing human touch, the orphans would grow stronger. Instead, nearly all of them died. The orphanages quickly learned that children who were hugged and had regular human touch lived and were healthy.
By depriving these kids of normal, healthy human touch the jailers might be murdering them.

(2,682 posts)By forbidding touch they also stop employees from bonding with the children. Wouldn't want the employees to become sympathetic and take opposition to the plan.
What they are doing is diabotical!!
