Video of racial slurs at Filipino-American in US goes viral
ALY CITY – A video of an elderly woman's racial rants against a Filipina and her family at a grocery store last week has gone viral.
The Vela family said it was a routine grocery trip when all of a sudden an elderly woman appeared in line behind them at the checkout.
“Out of nowhere she was like, ‘Oriental people here? You guys are making the streets dirty.’ and I was like ‘Hold on, is she talking about us right now?’ Because I couldn’t believe it,” said Jenny Vela.
Jenny, a Filipina-American, and her husband, Alfred, a Mexican-American, said that despite growing up in a diverse place like Daly City, they were shocked at this type of discrimination.
“It’s not right that we have to put up with this type of bigotry, racism, prejudice behavior especially coming from an elderly woman,” said Alfred.
The video has been viewed over half a million times.
“We’re thankful that everyone is able to see this. And we have a community that supports us and loves us,” Jenny said
Alfred added, “I just want to thank everyone for sharing it, commenting…because it’s a conversation that needs to be had.”
Fil-Am Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo said she was shocked and disappointed to see a hateful attack like this in her city.
