By corrupting elections both within its Cold War sphere of influence, but throughout the Western world, he aims to become not just a super power, but the supreme super power. As the so-called "free world" countries fall victim to Russian manipulation of their people's attitudes and beliefs, Putin will continue to reap the rewards without risking its weakened military and sub-par economy in the process. His method of conducting cyber-warfare is brilliantly original. It's already working quite well in the US and UK, while Italy, France, Germany, etc. are imperiled by Putin sponsored "nationalist" candidates and parties. An occasional failure isn't a problem. He'll just continue the manipulation.

I doubt if even he realized how successful he would be with Trump.
