"Der Giftpilz", or "The Poison Mushroom"

It was a children's book written and published in pre-war Nazi Germany. As you might guess, it was an anti-Semitic children's book meant to normalize hatred and persecution of Jewish people by Germans.

Here's two paragraphs from when Inge visits the "Jew-doctor".

Inge has been waiting for an hour. Again she picks up the magazines and tries to read. Then the door opens. Inge looks up. The Jew appears. A cry comes from Inge’s mouth. In terror she lets the newspaper drop. Terrified, she jumps up. Her eyes stare in the face of the Jewish doctor. And this face is the face of the Devil. In the middle of this devilish face sits an enormous crooked nose. Behind the glasses glare two criminal eyes. And a grin runs across the protruding lips. A grin that wants to say: “Now I have you at last, little German girl!”

The Jew comes toward her. His fat fingers grasp for her. But now Inge has recovered. Before the Jew can grab her she hits the fat face of the Jew-doctor. Then a leap to the door. Breathlessly Inge runs down the steps. Breathlessly she dashes out of the Jew-house.

This is what we are fighting. The endless sneers and race baiting the right loves to casually throw into the discussion are in the same vein and for the same overall purpose: dehumanization.

Witness Mike Huckabee's recent tweet: he posts a picture of four or five Latinos that look like violent felons (lots of tattoos, heavily muscled, scowling, etc.) and calls it "Nancy Pelosi's committee to take the House" or some shit.

And now they're testing how far the dehumanization has gone, with putting kids in cages, etc.

Feel free to use this as a debate point or something. I'm pissed and frustrated and just wanted to get this out there.

1. About the only good thing that can be said about 'The Poisonous Mushroom'

is that its creator, Julius Streicher ruined an otherwise perfectly good hemp rope when he stretched it out in Nuremberg after the war crimes trials.
